Written Android App Review

SavingStar Grocery eCoupons Android app has taken the concept of using coupons during grocery shopping to a whole new level. SavingStar Grocery eCoupons are loaded directly to a virtual card, but instead of the money being discounted at the register, the saved money stays in your SavingStar account. Once you have reached $5.00 in savings (which isn’t hard to do), you can choose to receive a payout via direct bank deposit, PayPal, gift card or donate the savings to That’s right – you now get to choose what to do with your savings from groceries!

While SavingStar also has a website, what makes their program even more amazing is the ability to utilize these savings on the fly via an Android cell phone. I performed a serious Android apps review of SavingStar – Let’s explore the app, shall we?

The SavingStar Android app is straight forward and once you have registered, it will take you immediately to a page displaying coupons with values often in the $0.50-$1.00 range. Almost every coupon here is a high dollar coupon! There are several ways the coupons can be sorted: suggested, value, alphabetical, expiration or category. Only want the high dollar coupons? Sort by Value. At the store and want to see what coupons are expiring soon that you snag? Choose Expiration. You get the idea.

There are also three different views the user can utilize: all, activated, or not activated. The activated comes in particularly useful while grocery shopping. Unlike using the other websites I typically use for digital coupons, I don’t have to carry around a separate list to remember what I’ve added. I can simply open up this app, select ‘Activated’ and do my shopping! Inversely, if I’m out shopping and notice a great deal on something I, I can quickly see if there is a coupon for it by selecting ‘Not Activated’.  Better yet, I can combine the two searches. If I select ‘Activated’ and then ‘Expiration’ in the sort drop down, I can now see what coupons I have that are expiring soon. Anyone who uses coupons will understand how vital this is!

The Android app also has a tab which allows the user to manage their account directly from their phone. Rewards can take 2-30 days to post (the only real downside to all of this) but once they have posted, I can initiate a payout directly from my phone! Alternatively, if a new grocery store were to move in to town, I could add their shopper discount card to my account through my phone as well. The account tab offers live updating of the account balance, so you will always know how much you have  in your account and when to cash out.

There is also a tab which explains how the program works and another one for more information. This tab includes an ‘About Us’ page, an FAQ, Feedback, Privacy Policy, Terms of Service and Legal information. Their FAQ boasts they participate with over 24,000 stores nationwide and represent nearly 100 retail chains.

Lastly, there is a fantastic widget for quick scrolling through coupons which have not been claimed yet. No need to open the app at all if all you want to do is check if there are new coupons! SavingStar gets five stars for functionality!

I must say, SavingStar did an incredible job with designing this Android app. The format is clean and utilizes warm shades of blue, green, gold and white. The coupons are easy to read and the discounts are clearly visible. Every coupon includes a high quality photo of the item and the expiration is plainly visible. Placing the tabs along the bottom instead of the top, like many apps do, helps keep the focus where it should be – on the coupons! The coupons display three per screen and scroll smoothly. Along the bottom is a small bar which shows how many eCoupons have been activated and how much the savings are worth.

The widget is nice although it may be cumbersome for some to use as it takes up an entire row on the screen. It has forward and backward buttons and displays all the pertinent information for that coupon, including a picture of the item. It is designed well, but it would be nice to see a slightly smaller widget. For this, the design loses half a star.

Do I even need to state how valuable this application is? Honestly, if you have a participating store in your area (and you probably do), you would be an utter fool not to utilize this application. Even if this is the only one you use – USE IT! Saving at the register is nice, but getting to choose what to do with the savings is even better. SavingStar gets five stars for value.

So what are you waiting for? Go get this app now! I promise you won’t be sorry!
