Written Android App Review
A few years ago a good friend of mine had one of those terrifying life moments when he took medication that had been mislabeled. Instead of getting the antibiotics he was expecting, he got a controlled substance that landed him in the ER. Everything ended up fine, but it was a tough couple of days for everyone involved.
The most interesting part of the whole story to me is that no one even realized what had actually happened for almost 48 hours. They looked at the pill bottle, but never bothered to open it up and make sure that the meds inside matched the name on the label!
Now just imagine if he had had an Android app like iPharmacy to fall back on! With one quick scan he could have had a picture of the pill in question as well as everything he could ever hope to know about a single medication. Pills don’t match the pic? You know instantly that there is a serious problem.
This is just the beginning of what the new iPharmacy Android app has to offer. Pictures of pills, yes, but oh so much more info that could make all the difference in the world during one of those scary and terrifying moments.
One of the best things about the iPharmacy Android app is that it works in several different ways. First, if you have the pill bottle, then simply scan the bar code using the camera on your Android. If the bar code is among the over 200,000 in the iPharmacy data base then you will soon have all the information you could want right there on the screen of your Android.
Your next option is a name search. This one is pretty straight forward. Just type in the name of the drug in question and iPharmacy will pull up all the relevant data.
The last option is one that is a bit more complicated, but could also prove extremely useful in the right situation. This feature allows you to identify a pill based on its physical characteristics. Select the shape, color and identifying marks on the pill in question and iPharmacy will pull up pictures of the closest matches, allowing you to scroll through and find the one you are searching for.
In terms of functionality, iPharmacy performed fairly well. It did seem like the Android app got bogged down at times causing things to slow to practically a crawl. While I would like to see things move faster, iPharmacy did not force close and did not seem to lock up all together.
This is the weak point when it comes to iPharmacy. First, this is one Android app that has quite a bit going on. So much so that the screen has a tendency to feel crammed and be difficult to read. Secondly, iPharmacy works through your Internet connection. Most of the time this is not a huge deal, but if you don’t have a connection, then there is no way to get the answers you need. And if you have a crazy slow connection then you are going to end up waiting most of the day for one set of search results.
So is this the Android app for you? Well at only $.99, iPharmacy is a steal. The information is very well put together and extremely handy to have in one convenient location. For that alone I would recommended this Android app. And while iPharmacy can be a bit difficult to use, its not something that you are going to have to pull out each and every day. It’s more of a once in awhile kind of thing. So give it a try. It’s worth it!
