Written Android App Review

Let’s face it, space has been the final frontier for a while now. That doesn’t make space missions, orbital rings, international space centers and cosmic goo any less awesome.

Now the latest news, images, Tweets and more from NASA (our very own National Aeronautics and Space Administration) are beamed right to your Android with the official NASA App for Android. Before I’m blown away by all that phenomenal cosmic power, let’s get on with this Android app review.

The folks managing the NASA App for Android certainly have a lot of information to share with us. The app has nine main areas that are constantly refreshing and updating, but the sheer amount of information in this app is mind boggling. Kinda like space.

With the NASA App you can keep up to date with the latest NASA missions; check in on the images of the day from the past 1698 days, or maybe you’d prefer one of the 5561 images in the Astro Pics of the Day section.

There is also a video section with flight reports, a Twitter feed section that had dozens and dozens of different special NASA-related Twitter accounts displayed, NASA TV content and listings, featured content, info about all NASA centers and a news section.

Whew. I’m exhausted just from listing all of that. Maybe the final frontier is NASA’s Android app. I don’t mind the vast quantity of content, and rather expected something this amazing from NASA.

Despite of the insane amount of content and features in NASA App for Android, it all functions brilliantly. Again, I expected nothing less from the people who send people into space.

The launch page with its nine brilliant buttons is the launch pad. Video and pictures are instantly available. You can even choose to view content in the app or use your Android’s built in utilities.

User Interface

Organization really makes NASA App shine. Each of the nine sections opens up a world of possibilities in tabbed sections. Additional options are available in each section by tapping your Android’s menu button.

Sure, it’s possible to wander for ages through the ever expanding bank of articles, videos, photos and more. But a simple tap of the menu button will show you a dedicated home button option. Wander as far as you’d like, you’ll always find your way back to the beginning.

Again, I chalk the success of NASA App up to the extremely detail oriented work of its design team. Brava.

NASA App for Android is free to download and enjoy. In the face of humongous budget cuts, I appreciate the effort to keep the fruits of the agency’s labors free to enjoy by all.
