Matreshka: Written and Video Android App Review
We like simple, addictive games, especially if we can carry them around on our Android phones. This is why we’re quite fond of Matreshka by developer InLogic. The app offers us traditional find-the-pea gameplay with an healthy mixture of Russian artistry. And at the root of the experience is the unbearably strong need to go back for “just one more round.” All in all, it’s a great Android game, and for our full review, you need only to slide on down below the break. Starting with:
Concept and Gameplay
Do you know that game they often have at country fair’s in the United States? It’s the sort of game where an old guy with a glint in his eyes throws a pea underneath a thimble, mixes it up with two others for a bit, and then asks you to find the vegetable. If you’re not familiar with that concept, then we’ll just go ahead and say it: Matreshka is a lot like that.
The app puts a piece of candy underneath a Russian doll, and then asks you to find the candy again after it’s been swapped, rotated, and generally mixed up with two other (blank but identical) dolls. If you can find the correct doll, you win the round. This keeps up, and the game makes the action harder and harder to follow. Essentially, you’re going for a new record with each play through, but you’ll also be able to spend cash on super candies and power ups to improve the gameplay. All in all, it’s a great concept, and despite the fact that it takes only an half a second to learn, it will almost certainly entertain you for hours.
Design and Graphics
However, the real draw with Matreshka is not likely to be found in the gameplay. After all, it is a rather basic concept. That being said, the real draw here is the sum total package that the game offers. Its graphics are traditional and brilliant looking, offering a robustness in color and variety that’s unique to the Android platform. Furthermore, the animations used in-game to demonstrate the doll shuffling could not be better, and are space just evenly enough that the game progresses quickly. That being said, we do wish there was a way to start a bit later in the game. We’d like to be able to pick up where we failed, especially once we start reaching very high levels.
At the end of the day, Matreshka is a tremendous value, as a free application in the Android Market. It comes with a lot of fun gameplay, and if you’re looking for an effective way to spend a few minutes in the queue, then you’ve got it easily with Matreshka. The app comes with in-app purchases should you want them, but as you’ll never exactly need to spend real money, Matreshka is an absolute steal. All in all, it comes with a solid rating from us, as well as our hearty recommendation.
