Frog Leaps Free: Written Android App Review
If you’ve got a thing for platform jumpers, but have been looking for one with a bit more control and a super cute frog hero, you’re in luck. The new Frog Leaps Free Android app from Megahard is all that and a bag of potato chips.
Savvy gamer that you are, you are doubtless familiar with the concept of a platform jumper. In most of these, steering is the only control in your arsenal, and that works O.K. But there is better gaming and more fun to be had with the style of gaming we see in Frog Leaps Free.
In this Android app, instead of the hero (or heroine) leaping all willy nilly, you have a say. Each leap is a planned step, and it’s your job to strategically navigate the trajectory of every single one. While that does slow down play a bit, it also means you are in complete control of your leaping frog’s destiny, and that’s kinda awesome.
As a result, not only are you judging the distance and height needed to successfully complete each jump, you’re navigating a vertical puzzle. Not all paths lead to the shimmering finish line. Consider Frog Leaps Free the thinking man’s platform jumper. You’ll plan your attack, and learn how to safely traverse 36 levels of high flying fun, facing collapsing platforms, sharp cactus-covered steps, all while collecting flies and coins.
Layout & Design:
The graphics are kept simple and unobtrusive in this platform jumper title. The title character (Frog!) is cute, and leaps with alacrity. The boards are pretty simple and change every once and a while as you progress. I found myself wishing for a bit more variety, to be honest. But it keeps the focus on the controls, which are the real highlight of this Android app.
I also ran into a bit of an issue with my phone’s back and menu buttons. It is way too easy to get in the grove, be leaping along, and accidentally pause the level or exit the app simply by dragging the trajectory arrow down too far. A bit of adjusting on the app’s part would be helpful here. Maybe make it easier to have screen space to expand the arrow automatically when you navigate to a new tile.
Despite a few issues with the game’s layout, Frog Leaps Free is a really cool app, with plenty of challenging levels and a cool twit on a tried and true gaming style. And, after all, it’s free to play.
Of course, free means the game has an on-screen advertisement pretty much all the time. It’s located at the top of the screen, and doesn’t interfere with play, which is nice. If you dig the title, which I highly suspect you might, there’s a paid version of the app you can get, without ads, for a mere $.99. Not too shabby, gamers.
The bottom line is this: Frog Leaps Free is one cool Android app.
