EverCrane: Written iPhone App Review
Every now and again we like to bring you a review that’s wholly fun-based: It involves a simple yet addictive concept that’s guaranteed to get your arcade brain churning and yearning for more. Today’s such offering is an application called Mark My Words that has you doing exactly that. The app has you guessing at who said what from what period in history, and it’s really quite a fun concept. Best of all, you can find our full review of the application right below the break and ready to roll!
Concept and Gameplay
The essential idea behind Mark My Words looks something like this: The app will present you, the user, with a certain quote. It may be a very easily recognized quote, or it may be something slightly more obscure from history. Either way, you’ll also get four possible responses to the quote—each of these is a possible person who might have said it. To get to the next level, you’ll need to correctly guess who in the heck coined the phrase. It’s a marvelously simple concept, and if you have even just a few moments to spare with the app, it can really liven up your day.
If you’re feeling stuck, as well, you can ask for assistance using the four included hints per quote. This allows you to dive a bit deeper into the historical context, and hopefully return with the proper answer. All in all, the concept itself is cleverly designed to involve just about the best possible combination of guesswork, foreknowledge and trivia.
Design and Graphics
We have to admit, one of the larger drawing points of the app is in fact its unique appearance. It’s got a very pleasing pseudo-steam punk look that we favored immensely. Furthermore, the app’s interface design lends itself quite readily to the gameplay style. What we mean is, it couldn’t be simpler to play. Just tap the answer you think is barking up the right tree, and Mark My Words will then let you know how you did.
We do wonder how much replay value there is in the app, though. It comes with an astonishing 800 quotes to play with, but at the end of the day, we wonder if the gameplay style alone is enough to keep pulling the player by the nose forward.
That being said, it’s an undeniable value, costing only nothing in the Google Play Store. Yes, you heard us right! There’s a free version which you can grab and immediately start playing with right now. Should you wish to expand the playing field a bit, you can also cheap in the paltry sum of two bucks to play the full version. Either way, it’s hardly a lot to ask, and you’ll get a lot of quotes in return.
