Unleash the Droid Within: 5 Things Your Android Phone Could Do (You Didn’t Know About)

Unleash the Droid Within: 5 Things Your Android Phone Could Do (You Didn’t Know About)

There are a few reasons why I use an Android phone instead of an iPhone. Notably, price has a large part in the matter. But outside of my own desires to be a cheapskate, I—alongside most Android users—just like the control I have over my device.

I also like the near infinite possibilities contained within this underdog platform. There are mountains of things your humble phone can do, and whether you know it or not, your Android device is just begging to take over almost every part of your life.

Need the proof? Here are just five things your phone can do that might surprise you:

1. Run Your Business with Android

Before you think we’re crazy, we not only know this can work, we have seen it work time and time again. I personally have used Android to perform transactions and manage my expenses. How do I do it? Pretty simply, actually!

First, get Square Reader or Square Wallet. They’re both free, and though they’ll charge 2% per transaction, you can now take orders from anywhere on the street. It’s as simple as that, and you’re ready to get selling!

To track those expenses, I prefer Evernote. Create specific notebooks or use some of the thousand extensions available to track receipts, sales, clients, business cards, and a host of other things.

2. Turn Off Your Television

This is a newer edition to the cutting-edge side of Android hardware development, but if you have a device that comes standard with an IR Blaster, you can throw away the old universal remote.

Yes, there are now Android phones that will turn off / on your tele, change the channel, pause the stream, or do just about anything else you can imagine. Use an app like IR Blaster to take care of the hard work.

3. Throw Away the Cable Box and Cut the Wires

On a similar note, you can now completely replace your cable setup using a beautiful new creation from the Big-G itself. It’s called Chromecast. Think of it as the $35 Apple TV for Android Users replacement.

The device plugs directly into your television via USB, and then connects to your Android devices. Once the connection is established, you are free to stream, play, pause, queue, and do anything else you might like through popular apps like Netflix, Hulu Plus, YouTube and many, many more.

4. Start Your Car with Your Phone

Want to press a button to have your car ready as you’re leaving the restaurant? Not a problem! Just swipe Viper Smartstart off the Play Store, as well as the company’s proprietary Bluetooth module, and you’re ready to roll! The app will lock, unlock, open, start and panic your car with a simple tap. It will even let your car chatter away on Facebook like a pre-teen. My, but we love this platform.

5. Develop, Explore, Root and So Much More!

Lastly, remember that your Android phone is exactly what you want it to be—nothing more, nothing less. For instance, with just a few settings changes, you can run third-party applications you install yourself, or modify the entire home screen with a new launcher.

You can even code an Android application on your Android device, using an app called AIDE. It’s a bit Inception, but it doesn’t get much cooler than that! And remember, no matter how much control you choose to exert over your Android, it’s still your baby, and these options will always be there.
