If you don’t know what LaTeX is, then you’re likely not a scientist or research student. The language is the de facto way to type up papers, reports, and other data-oriented documents.

However, there’s not been a great way to create LaTeX documents on the go. Until now, anyway.

VerbTeX LaTeX, from, is the easiest way we’ve seen yet to type up your notes while on the go. It provides a lot of features for the typing, too.

And if that’s piqued your interest, then scroll on down for our full review of this free LaTeX writer for Android.

Concept and Functionality

As stated, VerbTeX aims to do one thing, and to do it well: Enable you to type in full LaTeX distribution while using only your Android device.

It does this exactly as you might think, using the built-in keyboard and your own input.

The application takes care of the rest, highlighting the syntax as you go. And once you’re finished with your markup, simply export to PDF and VerbTeX’s dedicated servers will take care of the conversion for you. Or, you can save .tex files locally to your device for use later.

But here’s where things get interesting (and collaborative). If you’re more technologically inclined, you can save your file directly to the cloud using DropBox or Box.

In this way, you could easily maintain a document with multiple participants, even when those individuals are contributing all at once. And of course, you are free to move these files from the cloud to local storage or vice versa on a whim.

All in all, we have to say that VerbTeX is easily the best solution we know of for creating LaTeX documents on the go. In fact, it’s really the only one we know of. Thankfully, it’s good at its job.

Design and Interface

Like the LaTeX markup language itself, VerbTeX is pretty much a no-frills affair. You’ll get a basic, code-editor style interface and little else. Though, we in point of fact enjoyed this.

There’s no need for any additional clutter. We enjoyed the simple syntax highlighting (which works extremely well, for those curious about performance) against the minimalist interface.

It might be nice to have a better looking interface for other parts of the application, like the settings for instance. But there’s plenty of time for these improvements in the future: As of now, the app is well-designed enough to perfectly accentuate its functionality.

Overall Value

Considering VerbTeX is completely free in the Google Play Store, you really don’t have anything to lose here.

If you’re in need of a solid LaTeX editor that can travel with you in your pocket, you cannot beat VerbTeX.

It will provide everything you need, plus cloud syncing. And to us, that’s easily worth a look.

VerbTexVerbTeX requires Android  3.0+ and up. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
