We will admit: Usually when we need to look at a new lock screen replacement, we give it a big old groan. This isn’t because we dislike new lock screens—our phones would not be the same without them! Rather, we just feel like we’ve seen the lot of what’s possible, and nothing new ever gets accomplished within the genre.
Thankfully, though, the new Start, from Celltick, app has completely revitalized our faith in the field, and has proven us wrong. It is gorgeous, incredibly fast, terribly simple to navigate and the only replacement you will ever need for your start screen.
For our full review of this incredible app, you need only to look below the break.
Concept and Functionality
If you’re not familiar with replacement start screens, then we’re afraid you’ve really been missing out. These apps either put new things on your start screen, or replace it entirely. Throwing out all the junk, Start implements a newer, sleeker design.
So let’s start with that. Start is very good looking, a fact you’ll notice the minute you boot it up. However, the fun hardly ends there. Rather than trying to give you quick access to applications (like the standard lock screen) as a sort of “teaser” to the phone itself,
Start goes whole hog and lets you access just about anything directly from your lock screen.
Want to go directly to one of your apps? Hover the lock and then drag the circle to reach your phone’s whole directory. Want to see what’s happening in Twitter land? Use the pull-out bars along the side to see a latest feed. Search your phone with a tap, or get a weather forecast instantly. Browse the web, and then view your photo albums. The list goes on and on.
Truly, this is an impressive app, and it is the first lock screen we have ever tried that truly makes all this functionality effortless.
Design and Interface
Did we mention that Start looks good? Because if you can say anything about the app, it’s definitely that it’s a solid looker. The colors are smooth and crisp, the interface well laid out, and the responsiveness impressive.
We use an older Android device from day-to-day, and Start had zero trouble keeping up. In fact, our lock screen is now infinitely faster than it was before.
All in all, this is such a gorgeous application that we have a hard time describing it to you. One does not recommend the Mona Lisa. One demands that you see it.
At the end of the day, as a free app in the Google Play Store, you cannot beat what Start has to offer. If you’re currently using a lock screen modifying application, ditch it cold. Jump on The New Start instead, and we promise you will never look back.
It’s absolutely stunning, totally useful, and unbelievably engaging. What more do you need from a free app that makes your life easier?
Start requires Android 2.0 and up. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
