Yahtzee! Free is a fun to play gaming app from developer Computersmith available on Google Play. In Yahtzee! Free, gamers get a chance to tackle one of great classics of dice games on their mobile platform. How does it compare to its real-life predecessor? Stick with me as I review Yahtzee! Free to see if it is right for you.
Yahtzee! Free takes the game mechanics of Milton Bradley’s popular Yahtzee board game and brings it to the Android world.
Now, for those unfamiliar with Yahtzee, a brief introduction to this popular dice game of chance is in order. Basically, players get 5 dice and must roll these a set number of times, hoping to score the most by having the dice combinations fit into various patterns. Three of a kind, four of a kind, full house, large straight, etc.
Different amounts of points are given out based on how the rolled dice land. Once a combination has been used, it can’t be used again, thus eliminating various scoring options as the game progresses. It’s a fairly simple game, only requiring 5 dice and a scoring reference sheet, but it’s popularity has stood the test of time.
Now, Yahtzee! Free takes this classic concept and lands it on Android devices, all for free.
Gameplay is very straightforward and just like the original. You’ll be presented with a five dice at the top of the screen, all the possible combos, scoring sections (upper and lower), and a roll button.
Users can play single player, or take part in multiplayer with up to 10 players!. The multiplayer is the best aspect of Yahtzee! Free. After all, it’s hard to think of a more lonely game than one person rolling dice by themselves in some dark corner.
Instead, with multiplayer, you can play hotseat style or through a local network (wifi). The multiplayer option really is one of the best features of Yahtzee! Free and works wonderfully.
Finally, you can also view Global Leaderboard scores, and also experience the additional “Russian Roulette” and “Sequential” variety game modes.
Appearance and Layout
To be quite frank, Yahtzee! Free is not the most visually stunning game. The graphics, while adequate, are fairly simple. However, that’s somewhat fitting with the whole idea behind Yahtzee in the first place – just roll some dice and you are good to go!
The layout is very easy to figure out as most of the app takes place in one simple screen. Not too many complicated menus or other options to bog it down.
Yahtzee! Free is a nice take on a classic dice game, translated to Android. The developers did a great job of moving the game to your phone; it’s free, has a variety of game play options, and offers excellent multi-player modes.
I definitely recommend all Yahtzee fans pick this one up! It may not have the most attractive layout, but it gets the job done with it’s overall design and simple game mechanics.
Yahtzee! Free requires 1.6 and up. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this article.
