Discovering new applications for your Android device can be a bit difficult, though the Google Play Store is incrementally improving this functionality, so many users rely on third-party apps to find the best apps to download.
Appy Discovery is a new app which takes a more curated approach to this process.
Concept and Functionality
Appy Discovery isn’t designed to be a one-stop shop for all types of apps. Rather, Appy Discovery seeks to curate the best apps in a few select categories such as dating apps or foreign exchange trading (Forex) apps.
The app developers are headquartered in Australia so some apps are specific to that market, and the occasional “Aussie” reference pops up here and there.
Ease of use is definitely a key feature of this app. Tap one of the big, bold category icons and it takes you to a list of big, bold app icons. Tapping on any of these takes you straight to the Google Play Store entry for that app.
While the simplicity of the app was welcomed, it does need some polishing. The app worked fairly well on a Moto G phone but it has a number of problems running consistently on a Nexus 7 tablet. On a Samsung Galaxy S4 it seemed to run well but the screen with information “For Mobile Users” flashed by too fast to read and any screen with category buttons or app buttons would not let you scroll up so you could only see the bottom part of these screens.
What the app holds in easy functionality it lacks in features, but this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. What you see is what you get – apps to choose from and link off to the store, although at this time there are only a few dozen apps referenced.
The main “feature” as it were of this app is that you are receiving a list of apps that have been hand-selected from the Play Store. This can be a leg up on other app catalogs simply because you are not overwhelmed by choices which may or may not be useful apps to begin with.
There is not a lot of decision paralysis to be dealt with when using Appy Discovery – you simply pick one of the apps the developers have decided are worth taking a look at.
Appy Discovery is a simple, effective tool that gives you some insight into useful apps for a few categories. As time goes on, should the developers add additional categories and perhaps more details as to why they selected each app, this could become a much more insightful tool.
Aussies will get slightly more use out of it because of the regional nature of some of the apps, but really, anyone can find an app or two they may not have thought about before. After all, isn’t that the point of discovery?
Appy Discovery requires Android 4.1 and up. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
