Concept and Gameplay
While there certainly isn’t a shortage of Flappy Bird clones on Google Play, it’s actually surprising to see how many of them are an improvement over the original inspiration.
I immediately liked the graphics in Crazy UFO, primarily because they looked very sharp and crisp on my Nexus 7.
Crazy UFO is very straightforward and it’s easy to learn how to play. All you have to do is tap the screen to make your spaceship fly upwards. The goal of the game is to avoid crashing your spaceship into the ground or any obstacles.
There’s no control over how fast the UFO flies forward, so you have to do your best to avoid hitting any obstacles by flying through narrow openings.
If you happen to impact something while zooming through the sky, the game ends you can see your final score. You can also view your all-time high score on the same screen, as well as any medals you might’ve earned while playing Crazy UFO.
The game itself is designed very well, but Crazy UFO is plagued with large advertisements that take up a sizable majority of the screen. While I have absolutely no issue with games that include advertisements on menu screens, I’m not particularly fond of games that show ads while you’re playing them. It’s incredibly distracting and it takes away from the overall experience of playing.
The negative impact of intrusive ads aside, Crazy UFO does have a few neat features which improve gameplay. For example, there’s a progressive difficulty level that influences the speed of your UFO.
This means that the further you travel and the more obstacles you clear, the more likely the game will try and trip you up.
Also, Crazy UFO is primed to include global leaderboard functionality and even achievements and awards.
These features should be implemented when the next game update debuts on Google Play. Players will also be able to share their scores on Facebook, as well.
Crazy UFO is available to download from Google Play for free, but it will cost you $0.99 to remove ads.
Unfortunately the issue with ads being displayed during gameplay is the only thing that’s really holding me back from saying this is an incredibly great game.
Hopefully ads will be limited to the menu screen and/or the game over screen sometime in the near future.
