Concept and Gameplay
The idea behind Katang is to place as many colored shapes on the board as possible. Sounds simple enough, right? Well, it gets trickier. Hopefully not tricky enough to discourage players, but challenging enough to keep you on edge.
In order to play the game correctly, Katang requires you to make sure that shapes align with other shapes on the board of the same color.
There’s no time limit, though, so you have plenty of time to develop a strategy and figure out the mechanics of the game without getting too frustrated.
Players can easily rotate shapes and drag them to the board using their finger, but proper placement is key to a high score.
If you place a shape in the wrong area, you’ll receive a point deduction. White shapes are like wild cards and can be placed anywhere on the board to represent any color.
Overall, Katang feels like a very solid and well-built strategy game. Naturally it’s tricky to get the hang of it at first, but I like how the game is original and unique.
Plus it leaves plenty of room for players to do their own “thing” while having an end goal in mind, which is to get the highest score possible.
Kantang is very light on extra features, which isn’t a bad thing at all considering it’s a game that’s very fun to play.
Players are able to see a local scoreboard to keep track of how well they’ve played, but that’s about it.
One thing I’d like to see added to Katang is additional board themes so users can change colors of tiles if they like. Different effects might be neat, too, like a night mode or glowing shapes. This is merely a suggestion, though, but I think it’d be a cool way for users to customize the game.
Katang is available to download from the App Store for free, which is definitely a fantastic price. There’s an optional in-app purchase that removes ads, as well.
Overall, Katang is the perfect strategy game to try if you enjoy a good challenge.
While it takes a bit of time to master the concept of the game and develop your own strategy, it’s definitely a great puzzler for staying occupied and killing a bit of time.
