Here at Android Apps Review, we like a couple of things in our games: We like them to have words for us to string together, we like them to have levels for our continued amusement, and we like for them to have fun—lots, and lots of fun!
Thankfully, our application du jour—Word Pursuit—delivers on all counts.
Simply put, Word Pursuit is a delightful foray into word gaming on the Android platform, combining the best aspects of Boggle with a crossword puzzle-style arcade mechanic. It’s great fun, and for our full review, you need only slide down below the break!
Concept and Gameplay
If you have ever played the classic board game Boggle, then you already have a solid handle on how Word Pursuit, from Rezapps, behaves. The game presents the user with a large board of letters. From there, players must use their finger to draw out words of varying sizes.
For instance, if the word “Ham” can be drawn by going from an H up to an A, and then diagonally to an M, it’s a valid combination. This is how the lion’s share of the game is played, allowing you to knock out words from the game board.
To complete each level, the player must deliver the required number of points in the given number of moves. This varies from stage to stage, but if you’re into a challenge, you’ll certainly find it in Word Pursuit. As you learn the game’s ropes, it will slowly bump you up to a higher difficulty, allowing for more intense gameplay.
Word Pursuit also features a wealth of power-ups and incentives. There are bomb letters to knock out a number of tiles, as well as a three-letter-strike rule: Spell a word that’s at least three letters long in the same row or column, and the rest in that line will be deleted as well.
It’s all good fun, and with a mountain of levels to work through, we feel the average user will get a lot of mileage out of Word Pursuit.
Design and Interface
Word Pursuit isn’t exactly the best-looking word game we’ve seen for the Android platform, and though this doesn’t detract from the gameplay, it is a bit of a hangup for us. It’s a competitive market out there, and if you’re looking for something that’s slightly more “comfortable” aesthetically, the game’s harsh colors and clip-part graphics will not be your favorite.
That being said, there’s still too much gameplay here to rightly ignore. Word Pursuit is also unbelievably simple to navigate and to play: Even a child could do it. With such a large amount of levels to work through, as well as a consistently good interface, this is a true keeper.
Best of all, Word Pursuit won’t cost you a darn thing to enjoy. It’s completely free in the Google Play Store, making it one of our easiest recommendations ever. The game is fun, innovative, and endlessly rewarding with all of its gameplay.
If you desire a brand new arcade-based word game to play through, we suggest you download Word Pursuit, we think you’ll be happy you did.
Word Pursuit requires Android 2.3+. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
