Do you ever miss the days when the arrival of a birthday meant presents, cake, and of course, tons of birthday cards? How about getting a “get well soon” or a “congratulations” in a little envelope?
While greeting cards are still a booming business, if you’re anything like us, you’re more likely to get a post to your Facebook wall or an e-card as you are anything printed.
When it’s your turn to send digital good wishes, maybe you’d like to stand out from the rest.
Concept and Functionality
Getting started with ThotOfU is as easy as a quick Facebook login. The app won’t actually function without it, so if you’re not a Facebook user, you’ll have to sign up or skip this app for now.
We’d like to see integration with Google+ or another social network to give some options, or at least an email-only version, but for now, we’ll stick with sending Thots to our Facebook friends.
Once you’ve logged into the app, it loads to a very handy list of the upcoming and recent birthdays for your friends. In this regard it’s not only good for sending digital greetings to birthdays that are on the way but it also can give you the belated reminder if you accidentally forgot someone.
You can also see a list of all of your friends. Select a friend, then select a frame for your Thot, then add a picture (either from stock or from your gallery) and a message, and send via Facebook, Whatsapp, or email.
It took us less than 3 minutes to log in, design, and send a birthday greeting. ThotOfU is dead simple to use!
The Thot designer has a decent range of templates all centering around a frame for a picture.
The templates come in wide variety of colors and styles, some more suited for holidays than birthdays, and you can add a text message with a few editing options like color and size.
The biggest feature of ThotOfU is the image gallery that comes with the app. There are a host of free images you can use to customize your greetings, ranging from congratulatory graphics to food images to romantic pictures.
The app actually encourages you to think beyond just the birthday greeting and send Thots for any number of reasons.
The caveat to the image gallery is that only some of the images are free. While they’re organized into easy categories to sort through, many of them require image credits which are available in in-app purchase bundles.
The smallest image bundle you can pick up is 3-5 images but once you’ve done so, you can use them over and over without spending credits again.
Unfortunately there is no way to filter out just the free ones from the rest so you’ll do a bit of scanning if you want to send a Thot without spending money.
Given the ease of adding your own photo, you may end up doing that more often, but it’s nice to have the stock photo gallery there just in case you run low on inspiration.
The conceit of ThotOfU is nice inasmuch as it encourages you to think of others and send little digital notes to them.
ThotOfU is an app that you’ll think of often, especially around holidays and birthday time. It would be even better with a few more login options and some additional image sorting options.
ThotOfU requires Android 2.3+. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
