Over the years, we feel we’ve made it abundantly clear here at the Android Apps Review that we freaking adore any new arcade game that can deliver a unique concept, engaging gameplay, and more than enough reason for us to keep coming back again and again.
This game is hard as nails, but also a thrill ride from beginning to (a usually speedy) end. It’s got a concept that’s a breath of fresh air in the stale arcade air, as well as controls that could not be simpler.
If that’s got you interested, then slide on down below the break for a look at the whole thing!
Concept and Gameplay
We’ve mentioned it a couple of times now, but Grapple really delivers on the ingenuity front. We have never seen a similar idea anywhere else, and it’s rather fun—if a bit tricky.
Essentially, the player will “swing” from orbital point to orbital point, moving up the game’s endless screen to grab more apples, power-ups and other such point-getters. It’s quite fun, and thankfully, it all rests on a fairly simple control scheme.
To swing in an orbit around one of the game’s orbs, just tab and hold. The ship will go into a soft (or very, very fast) circle, and you can do a bit of strategic planning. When you’re ready, simply release your finger, and away the ship goes. Keep doing this to move up the board, and secure your legacy.
It’s tricky stuff, especially considering the game doesn’t really ease you into things. It’s all full-speed all the time around here, requiring the average user to get acquainted quickly.
We had a lot of trouble with the concept at first, but things got easier once we realized it’s less about moving quickly, and a lot more about planning your orbits strategically.
With that hurdle out of the way, we quickly began to gain further ground!
Design and Graphics
It certainly helps Grapple’s case that it looks as good as it does. This is not a cheap arcade title, or even a retro-styled knockoff. This is a fully fleshed-out arcade game with its own, inventive looks and an easy-to-manage control scheme.
Overall, there’s a certain pastel meets Valve appeal to the layout. We enjoyed the snazzy colors and complicated map layouts.
We also appreciate the wealth of power-ups and incentives sprinkled all throughout the experience.
Once the challenge wears off, it becomes increasingly apparent that the developers truly have thought about the end-user, and have crafted a well-oiled arcade machine.
At the end of the day, it’s hard to argue with the app’s free price tag, too. Without anything coming out of your pocket, you can go ahead and get swingy with it.
Considering that low cost of entry, we absolutely cannot help but recommend the title to any Android arcade game fan. If you like titles like Geometry Wars, or even Galaga, you’ll probably find even more to love here than the average player.
All in all, it’s maddeningly difficult at times, but Grapple is a brave new face for Android gaming.
Grapple Up requires Android version 2.3+. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this news item.
