Foci is a unique and interesting Android app that lets you colorfully rate and view geocentric and event information from different content sources in one easy-to-access geosocial app.
Developed by Foci, this app primarily features the ability for you to use different colors for the emotional descriptions of a locale. Whether that is joy, trust, fear, surprise, sadness, disgust, anger, or interest, Foci lets you attach this “emotional” description to a place.
Foci has a rating system where you can choose to rate events and places according to your likes or dislikes.
Since Foci is a geosocial app, it also lets you follow people and see their marked places in which they have attached their own emotional descriptions to places they have been.
Not only that, but Foci also lets you find events and places nearby that match your current mood and things that you might be interested in.
We’re intrigued by how it’s designed to add an emotional dimension that is normally absent from commonly used apps in today’s world.
Instead of just having text appear, one can now view the true emotional state and its associated color that usually accompanies a place, event, etc. Plus you can add content from a wide variety of sources such as web sites, streaming services, apps, videos and more.
Appearance and Layout
The appearance of Foci is vivid and bright, and lets the user instantly see the variety of color-coded location in his or her vicinity. Akin to Google Maps but with different highlight balloons on the map, Foci is certainly unique in its appearance.
It’s well laid out with not too much clutter, and since it requires an active data or wifi connection, you’re required to sign in or sign up before using it.
Foci has a few short slides you can view at launch that give a brief overview of the features available.
The Settings menu contains only one option – to logout. We’d like to see this aspect of the app improved by either adding in more setting options or by getting rid of it and just having a Logout icon.
The value of Foci is great, especially since it’s a free app. However, Foci does have ads that appear when you try to view someone’s nearby Foci.
Overall, for an ad-support app that seems to combine Yelp with Google Maps, Foci gets a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
Foci requires Android 4.0 and up. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
