Believe it or not, I am actually quite acquainted with the world of model trains. My grandfather was an extreme enthusiast back in the day, and I spent many afternoons in my childhood either looking at intricate models or perched on a hill doing some train spotting.
It is with this in mind that we bring you a full review of Train Driver 15 today.
The app offers easily the most thorough and entertaining look at what it means to be a train conductor in today’s ever-changing world.
Better still, you can have all of that entertainment and knowledge without leaving the comfort of your own armchair.
If that’s got your interest piqued, then head on down below the break for our full review!
Concept and Gameplay
As you might have guessed from the title, Train Driver 15 is a fascinating simulation app that offers you the chance to put on the conductor’s cap and get behind the “wheel” of various trains.
You’ll do all the work: Driving cargo across different continents, ferrying passengers from station to station, and making sure everything runs smoothly. How will you be doing all of this?
Well, you’ll primarily be using the game’s realtime train conducting interface. In the same way that something like a flight simulator attempts to give you (an almost psychotically) accurate reproduction of the real thing, so too does Train Driver 15.
You can drive the train from the cabin of the engine, or you can use the top-down navigation camera. Either way, all the real work will be one by operating levers and buttons placed delicately around the graphics in the center.
It’s simple to get the trail rolling, and equally as simple to interact with the view points required of you as a burgeoning conductor.
All in all, it’s clear that the game’s developers have tried very hard to both accurately and simply recreate the experience at heart here. The result is something that’s easy to manage, but still manages to put us right there in the action.
Design and Graphics
A bit more on the design front: the game’s interiors are absolutely stunning, and any train geek will love the often startling detail.
Likewise, the fact that the game comes with a wealth of unlockable engines and missions is quite a boon. The gameplay is always just on the cusp of being a bit boring—simply by the nature of the gig at hand—so these incentives are marvelously effective.
Furthermore, the environments truly are wonderful. I am extremely partial to the Western United States, and the expertly created reproductions of it here are simply stunning.
At the end of the day, it’s also hard to argue with the price tag. Train Driver 15 can be had for now money down.
If you’d like to remove in-game advertisements—and we have a feeling you will, considering how glaring they are—that will cost you a nominal fee.
All in all, it really comes down to this: Train Driver 15 is easily the best train conducting simulation we have seen on the Android platform, and it will likely remain that way.
Is it at times a bit tedious? Yes, but then again, where else will you find this level of detail and success? Simply nowhere!
Train Driver 15 requires Android version 2.3+. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
