You see, back in the 1920’s (or earlier if you like) you got the news slowly and via a street corner.
Now, we’re awash in options: so much so that the overwhelming tide of information can be downright impossible to navigate. What’s the solution?
The app is the perfect antidote to modern news rage. It’s succinct, easy to navigate, and totally free. All things we like! For more, visit our full review just below the break.
Concept and Functionality
As stated, News Kit tries to make it as easy as possible to get as much information as possible. Seems like a noble goal, right? And for the most part, what you find here is a screaming success.
News Kit starts with a basic tiles layout. Each tile contains a single news source that’s piping headlines in a visually pleasing way directly to your peepers.
There’s an image in the background to tease you, as well as a quick recap overlay to get you going. Want to know more? Tap the news source, and that’s it! Reader view is included to greatly enhance your experience.
All of this alone isn’t entirely new. We’ve seen it done elsewhere with apps and on the Net. However, the sheer customization at hand is staggering.
News Kit is incredibly comprehensive, supporting just about every language and just about every news source on the globe—including The Globe.
As a fluent French speaker, I greatly appreciated the option to intermix my English sources with my Canadian (and even French) locations.
Swap out any tile on the dashboard to immediately receive snapshots of the news you care about, down to the region. News Kit will even ding you with reminders to read the news in the morning, or whenever you like.
Design and Graphics
This is clearly an application that’s been doted upon. The interface is slick, never hangs, and ultimately proves itself the MVP of the team.
We have yet to see a photo that didn’t resize correctly. Likewise, the touch controls could not be any more basic. Hold to change the layout, or access the same from the in-app menu.
In future versions we’d like to see more support for in-app reading options. Some speech functionality might be cool, as would more reader-style in-app browsing.
That being said, it’s hard to beat the auto-scrolling, wonderfully colored experience that is already installed.
News Kit is even more of a bargain when you consider the cost—nothing! You can begin your adventures with the application today at no cost.
If you want to unlock the full potential of the app (unlimited panels, no advertisements, etc.) it will only cost you $3 to do so.
All in all, News Kit is a fabulous resource with a lot of potential. If you let it, the title can transform the way you receive and digest the news. And to us, that’s easily worth every penny.
News Kit requires Android version 4.1+. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
