Here at the Android Apps Review, we’ve always had a very soft spot in our hearts for manga. Sure, it can be awfully cheesy at times, and yes there are definitely tired out motifs. But, the beautiful thing about the genre is that there are always new titles, and if you can find the right series, the content is out of this world.
To help you sort the good from the bad, consider using a terrific new Android app, Spottoon.
Spottoon is a brilliant and free application that delivers all the comics you want without any of the unnecessary hunting.
If that’s got your interest piqued, then head on down below the break for our full review! Starting with:
Concept and Functionality
As stated, Spottoon, from RollingStory Inc., has only one goal in life; to bring you all of the comics you want without any of the hassle.
This can be quite hard, especially as the app deals in so called “webtoons,” or manga strips published on the Internet. Obviously, this isn’t as stringent a field as traditional publishing, and the content is quite varied in quality.
Thankfully, all of it is sifted and tastefully sorted in Spottoon. Without any problems, you an simply pick a genre from within Spottoon, find a piece that looks interesting, and get straight to reading. It’s that simple!
No muss, no fuss: just hours of reading pleasure for you featuring high quality-webtoons from some of the best Korean artists.
Overall, it’s a wonderful experience, and one that works incredibly well on the platform.
In a way, it’s like Netflix for webtoons. You can easily navigate the interface to find the kind of strip you want, and it’s delivered instantly to your device for offline reading using your computer, tablet or phone. Better still, Spottoon will keep track of all the updates. This is quite a handy feature, and it means that you’ll always have the latest and greatest without having to hunt for it.
Sum total, Spottoon is a solid concept with easily managed functionality.
Design and Interface
Spottoon also does quite a good job of getting out of the way: Which might seem an odd comment, but it’s truly a necessary one.
The entire point of the app is reading pleasure, and because of this, we don’t want a whole lot of digital dongles hanging around and causing problems. Rather, the interface slinks away when you need it to, and stays neatly nearby when you want it.
In this way, we think Spottoon is a well-designed app with hardly a complaint to be found. We’ve seen some user reports of crashing from time to time, but we have encountered none of this ourselves.
At the end of the day, if you’re fan of the genre, you’re going to get a lot out of Spottoon. Even for a casual reader, the free price tag easily makes the app worth a look.
For those that read constantly, it might even become a daily companion for the bus ride, or those quiet moments spent curled up on the couch.
All in all, this is not a title to be missed if you’re a serious fan, or a part-time reader.
Spottoon requires Android version 4.0+. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
