Alright ladies, it’s time to get comfy with the idea of using your Android device as a fertility tracker. Though it might sound like a taboo or “icky” subject to some, knowing what’s going on with your body is an invaluable tool for your health and your relationship.

Simply put, with Dot Fertility & Period Tracker keeping track of your menstrual cycle could not be any easier.

This no-nonsense app uses patent-pending technology to calculate your chances of conception. This is a great app for planning pregnancy, avoiding it, or simply tracking your period every month.

Concept and Functionality

Dot is the first app I’ve reviewed that’s currently undergoing an official scientific study.

The proprietary algorithm the app uses to determine your chances of pregnancy on any given day, called Dynamic Optical Timing, is currently being studied at Georgetown University. If a study group takes an interest in an app, you know it has to be good!

Though I’ve only used fertility trackers in the past for review purposes, I can honestly say that Dot, a free Android app by Cycle Technologies, Inc., stood out from the rest almost immediately.

I fell in love with the interface of the app and the fact that it wanted to know what your purpose was for downloading – preventing pregnancy, planning pregnancy, or tracking periods. Depending on your answer,

Dot customizes itself to fit your needs. It truly feels like an app designed just for you, the user.

Dot isn’t wordy or overly scientific, which is another reason to love it. The interface uses simplistic visual aids to help you see where you’re at in your cycle, which means you can quickly open the app and glance at information without sifting through charts, graphs, and so on.

Knowing that Dot is extremely serious about helping women stay on top of their cycles, I expected quite a bit from the app in terms of features.

I’m definitely happy to say I’m not disappointed. For example, the app takes brevity to a whole new level by color-coding the interface to match your cycle.

Once you understand what each color means, you’ll know what’s going on immediately.

For women who are looking for a way to track emotional and sexual health, Dot features a journal system that allows you to log symptoms, mood, and events.

Don’t be afraid to take advantage of this feature; it’s an excellent way to understand everything that’s going on with your cycle and it truly maximizes the effectiveness of the app.

Dot is available to download from Google Play for free, and there’s a pro upgrade available for $2.99. While the upgraded version does unlock a few extra features like interface customization and status notifications for your partner, the coolest thing about the upgrade fee is that a portion of it goes towards providing contraceptives to women in need. How neat is that?

Overall, Dot is a fantastic app for women who want to know everything there is to know about their cycle.

It’s perfect for families who are trying to grow, couples who aren’t ready for little ones just yet, or preventing a surprise visit from Aunt Rose.

downloadDot Fertility & Period Tracker requires Android 4.1+. You can download it from Google Play.
