Bubbles 2 HD by developer DroidHen Games offers solid brick-breaking fun on the Android platform. The Android app offers a multitude of power-ups and specials that keep the gameplay interesting, but it certainly has some innovation issues to work through. However, at a stellar price and with such great design, Bubbles 2 HD is a hard bargain to pass up.
Gameplay
Bubbles 2 HD Android app doesn’t stray far off the path from the like-colored brick-breakers to come before it. The player is presented with a game board filled with multi-hued bricks—or bubbles in this case—which can be broken to bits by clicking on groups with the same color. The more bubbles you pop, the higher your score goes. As you go about your demolition business, the game produces a myriad of power-ups that are thrown into the mix. If you manage to pop the bricks with specials attached to them, an interesting assortment of results are produced: Everything from nuking the entire board, to knocking out a few random rows, to freezing your timer. It adds much needed spice to a well-used game mechanic, and it certainly makes the app. There are three different game modes to chose from, all of which change the way the timer works. Arcade allows you to play so long as you keep popping, while classic mode gives you a set amount of time to pop as many bubbles as you can. Endless mode, of course, lets you keep brick-breaking until the cows come home.

Ingenuity off the table, Bubbles 2 HD looks great on my Android phone. The bubbles themselves are pleasantly hued, with just the right amount of charm and feyness. The game certainly has a cutesy element to it, which if you’re a hard-smoking Harley-riding lumberjack, you may find off-putting. However, if you’re just an average user looking for a quick diversion, it’ll do just fine. The menus are simple, and seeing your previous high scores is as simple as pushing a button. Likewise, choosing a game mode, pausing the fun, or selecting bricks could not be simpler.
Value and Fun
As stated, Bubbles 2 HD is completely free in the Android Market, which is by far its biggest boon. The game offers solid, classic Android apps gameplay that won’t disappoint, though if you’re like me, you’ll likely spend most of your time in arcade mode, as it offered the most innovation. Still at zero dollars and zero cents, Bubbles 2 HD is a fantastic way to kill a few minutes in the queue or smooth over a long commute. You’ve got nothing to lose, and thousands of bubbles to pop: Time to get cracking!
