Written Android App Review
Have you had just about enough of Angry Birds? Are you looking to add something just as cute to your Android device, only with even more challenging gameplay? Do you have a thing for kitschy music tracks and small yellow avian mascots? If you answered yes to any of those, Toki Tori, by Polarbit, has finally landed in the Android Market, and is ripe for the picking.
Gameplay
Whether you’re familiar with Toki Tori’s lengthy history or not, all of the classic gameplay elements that make the title unique are offered here. You play as a small, hapless bird who is on a mission to collect several unhatched eggs on each level. You control your jaundiced avatar by simply pointing in any direction you’d like to go, often with the aide of unique items, like bridge builders or teleportation tunnels. Once rolling, you’re charged with collecting a certain amount of eggs, or you won’t be able to pass on to the next level. If you get stuck (which you will) the game offers the ability to rewind your moves, setting back the clock to just before you painted yourself into a corner. In essence, Toki Tori is half search-and-find and half Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. Thankfully, it’s all fun.

Graphics
Toki Tori began its life as a Gameboy Color game, shall we say back in the day. Since then, it’s hit several major platforms, including Macintosh, Windows, Wii, iOS, and now finally Android. The game sports a very cheery, Nintendo-ish look that serves it well. The main character is lively and the animations crisp, and the game worlds themselves are brilliantly designed. The levels are engaging and difficult, but not so much so that you’ll be put off by their ingenuity. You’ll easily find yourself spending several minutes on a single puzzle, warping around the map as well as back and forth within the game’s time stream. The menus look great as well, and with such hefty in-app documentation, you will never once feel out of place. The game guides you through the basics, making it even more rewarding when you hit the harder levels.
Value
Admittedly, Toki Tori is a bit pricy, currently resting at $2.99 in the Android Market. However, for your money you’ll get four game worlds ripe with many different levels. Each level, as stated, is a work of mobile art with a long lineage, offering guaranteed quality in each instance. The game is very portable, and one could easily spend a few minutes, or a few hours, chipping away time by collecting eggs. Toki Tori has been a long time coming to the Android platform, and if you’re a fan of the series or not, you can’t go wrong adding it to your device.
