Written Android App Review

Mixology Drink Recipes, available on the Android platform from developer Digital Outcrop, is your one stop shop for drink recipes, bar tending lessons, and drink terminology. The Android app will do everything short of buy you a cab home, but even then, I wouldn’t be surprised if the functionality appeared in later updates.

Function

Mixology has one express purpose, and without fail, it succeeds astoundingly: It wants to teach you everything you ever wanted to know about drinking. Obviously, a big part of the app is the assortment of recipes it ports—and by assortment, I mean the whole trove. The massive number of listed concoctions can be sorted via ingredients, drinking category (cocktails, shooters, etc.) or in one giant string, if you aren’t too particular. If you’ve got some bottles laying about and aren’t exactly sure what to make, you can use the liquor cabinet to input what you’ve got, and Mixology will do the rest: In a jiffy it supplies a list of recipes involving your ingredients. Not only that, but the app includes an entire rundown on drink terminology via its bartending tab. And to top it all off, Mixology will actually use your phone’s GPS to locate nearby liquor stores, saving you the trouble of stumbling around in pursuit of one. Truly, Mixology’s developers are decent people.

Design

Navigating the app’s contextual menus could not be simpler: With an easy row of tabs along the bottom offering Mixology’s most important features, everything you need is a click away. I also appreciated the pictures of drinks that rest just beneath the menus. It’s a small touch, but it adds a certain amount of polish that’s appreciated. Likewise, descriptions of drinks and drink recipes are display crisply and clearly. Even if inebriated, it should be dirt-easy to read—presumably, that’s a boon for most people. My only complaint is that the app sports healthy banner adverts, but then again, the developers need to make a living, too. If you want your drinks without any pesky advertisements, you’re welcome to pay a $ .99 fee for the Pro version of the app, which will remove the only blight on Mixology’s façade in a heartbeat.

Value

I don’t believe my nights out drinking will ever be the same. Priced at an awe-inspiring zero dollars and zero cents, Mixology offers such a wealth of information about liquors and drink recipes it’s astounding. Combined with location features, that make finding booze even easier, as well as an Urban Spoon style random wheel if you’re feeling lucky, there’s hardly an unsatisfactory element in this app’s package. If you’re a drinker—no matter how hardy—you owe it yourself to check out Mixology.
