Written Android App Review

Surprisingly, Walmart has released a fairly impressive Android app which gives users daily deals, local ads, recent rollbacks and more. For a store app, it is remarkably comprehensive and offers tremendous value for Walmart shoppers – both in the store and online.

Features:

Value of the day: This is the top button and it should be. These daily deals are often combo packages meant to entice consumers to spend more by buying more at once. For instance, today’s package is a movie bundle including The Incredibles 2-disc set and Cars 2 2-disc set in Blu-ray at $40. This means each movie is being sold at $20 each. Cars 2 is going for $22.99 on Amazon right now The Incredibles is being sold at $18.99 (same 2-disc sets). This is a total of $41.98. So really it’s less than a $2 savings. For some this might be worth it, but if I can get free two day shipping from Amazon, I’m more likely to take that route. I would like to see better deals here, but perhaps that is coming.

Rollbacks:

Walmart is well known for their “Rollbacks” so of course this is also a must-have for this app. This feature allows the user to search by category or keyword for recent markdowns on items they might want or need and to find out if the offer is available in their store or online only. It provides a full product page for each item the user selects which includes product description, ratings and reviews and the ability to purchase by visiting the full website. Results can also be filtered in a number of ways, such as by rating, best match, price, new items or best sellers.

Local Ad:

This app also provides users instant access to their home store’s local ad. Unfortunately, it would appear my store either did not have an ad this week or it could be this feature isn’t working just yet. When I try to view my local ad, I simply receive a message stating my store did not have one this week and to check back Monday.

Pharmacy:

The Pharmacy section is incredibly thorough and provides users the ability to order prescription refills, find a nearby Walmart pharmacy, browse their $4 prescriptions and more. Pressing the button redirects the user to a browser page, but it is mobile optimized so loads quickly and responds well. This also means the information can be update live and available instantly without unnecessary application updates.

Photo:

This is another feature which redirects to a web browser but this one requires the user to sign in. Regardless, this is also a mobile optimized page so load times are fast. Users can browse through their albums (if they’ve used Walmart’s photo services previously), view their friend’s albums (if applicable), share photos or even order prints and pick them up from the store in an hour. My only complaint here is the inability to upload to a new album – it would be great if a user could take a picture and immediately send it to Walmart to be printed.

Design:

The app uses Walmart’s standard colors of blue, white and yellow and maintains their clean and professional image. The picture when the app first loads up shows an associate helping a mother and her daughter with an Elmo toy – the typical image you would expect to see of Walmart, who focuses on family values as a cornerstone of their business. Navigation is smooth and easy. My only complaint is that in the sections which use a web browser, the user has to use their back button repeatedly to get back to the main app.

Value:

Walmart’s application is packed with value and I suspect it will get better with time. The value of the day, rollbacks and local ad will help any good bargain hunter get the deals before others do. The pharmacy could be vital to anyone who relies on Walmart for their prescription needs. And anyone who uses Walmart for their photo printing needs will be thrilled it was included in this app.

  1. One of the best articles that I’ve read. I can honestly say the author was right, although sometimes I’d put some of the issues a bit differently. However I accept that everybody has their own opinion, and the most objective article.
