Written Android App Review
If you love Zappos.com, you will love their new Android app as well. Zappos.com is best known for their shoes and the ability to order anything, free shipping both ways and a 365 day return policy. In the shoe world, it doesn’t get much better than that! They have since expanded into clothing, housewares, accessories, bags, and cosmetics. Thankfully, their app allows users to browse for all of these things and even make purchases straight from the app. Pure awesomeness.
Zappos
Features:
The Zappos Android app is fairly simplistic when it comes to features but that seems to be best for this type of app. Basically, there are the standard functions such as search, browse, favorites, account, sorting by brands (A-Z) and an info button. There is a scrollable bar that runs through the middle of the screen which promotes their return policy. Clicking on it brings up more information about their policies. The bar also allows the user to direct dial Zappos’ customer service. The top half of the screen seems to be reserved for featured items – one for each category. The pictures are scrollable and slide smoothly across the screen.
After browsing for and selecting an item, the user can customize that item by color, size or width (if applicable). Clicking the ‘Share’ button brings up a message box with suggestions like, “Oooh, look!” or “’Cuz sharing is kind:” and “What do you think?” Alternately, the user can type a custom message as well. It can then be posted to Facebook, emailed, text messaged, or saved in a variety of ways depending on the apps installed on your phone. The product page also includes product details, reviews and brand information as well as multiple pictures of the item.
The best part? After finding an item the user wants to buy, they can click ‘add to cart’ and when they’re done shopping, check out right from their phone! Avid Zappos shoppers will surely go broke with this handy feature.
Of course, there are other features as well such as the ability to sort how the list is displayed (alphabetically, by price, etc.). Users can also filter data by price, product type, width, gender, color and size. Lastly, there are two views available – slideshow (called “Woah”) and list view. This is the only area I have a complaint about – these settings and filters would be fantastic, except they don’t save! So if I’m looking at clothing then switch to cosmetics, I have to reset any sorting or filtering I had applied previously. For this, the app loses half a star.

Design:
Like many retail giants, Zappos is following the accepted color scheme of ultimate cleanliness – white, blue and orange. What I particularly love about their pictures is that every item is on a white background. This makes viewing each item picture simple, clean and efficient. There are no distractions or other unnecessary colors to detract attention away from the item. Every picture was clearly taken in superb lighting conditions as well. The interface feels light, even though it has plenty of features. Everything is straight-forward so there is no confusion. Browsing is efficient and scrolling is smooth (except when pictures are loading). I give five stars for design.
Value:
The Android app is free and it doesn’t get much better than free, right? However, the probability that you will spend a lot of money using this app is high! Regardless, I am giving this app five stars for value. It is simply doing what it was meant to do – encourage people to buy their products. Bravo – well done.
