Written Android App Review

What do you get when you mix blocks, directional puzzling, and multi-colored squares? The answer is a unique Android app called Blox Roll, by developer Droid Hermes. This engaging and unique puzzler for Android is a whopper of a free app, and will have you twisting and contorting until the end of time.

Gameplay

Let’s kick things off with my Android app review. The gameplay offered in Blox Roll is truly one of a kind. The Android app has you mangling and maneuvering a four-by-four block about a grid board in an attempt to land it on a set of marked tiles. You’ll either have to land the cube on its side or on its face to complete the mission. This changes from level to level, as does the direction the block needs to be in order to satisfy the puzzle. Moving the cube around is as simple as pushing up, down, left or right. If you accidentally land the cube on a blank square, it’s game over, and you’ll feel like rubbish. However, there’s no penalty for failure, so you’re free to try, try again!

This game mechanic is relatively simple, but it allows for an extreme amount of complexity. By strategically omitting squares and designing odd paths, the developers have created a game world that’s a challenge to solve just as much as it is a challenge to navigate.

Design

Blox Roll’s design does leave a bit to be desired. The controls themselves are stupendously simple, and take up the proper amount of screen space to be helpful but not a hindrance to visibility. The number of moves taken and the total score are tucked away into a corner of the level and the puzzle itself takes center stage. However, the black background and sparse layout do make the app feel a bit spartan. The app provides very basic in-app documentation to explain the game, but if you’re looking for menus of any kind, they simply aren’t here. This is a small complaint, but Blox Roll is a very small Android app, and it certainly feels like it. Similarly, the twenty five included levels may seem too short—or too long—to you, depending on how good you are at the puzzles.

Value and Fun

Thankfully, Blox Roll has one tremendous boon going for it: It’s pricing. The Android app is ad-supported free, meaning it won’t cost you a dime to experience the game’s unique mechanic and brain-teasers. It’s good sporting fun, and though the design leaves a body wanting, the levels are still clever enough to be challenging. With a free price tag, you’ve got nothing to lose by giving Blox Roll a go, and many hours of brain-stretching fun to gain.

Android Apps Review Details: Blox Roll Android app is free. This app requires Android 1.6 and up. You may download Blox Roll from the Android Market.
