Written Android App Review
Can an Android app help you relive the good ole’ days when life was simple and kids everywhere ran around with little tablets and pencils, asking their friends to give them an adjective, a noun, an adjective or a body part. After hurriedly scribbling on the tablet, the child would proceed to read a story using the information provided which rarely made sense but was sure to bring on long bouts of hysterical laughter. These were the days of MadLibs.
Have you ever wished you could re-create those days? Well now you can! Just download Pocket MadLibs Andorid app from the Android Market and MadLib yourself into a frenzied ball of laughter. Just don’t blame me if your sides are sore the next day!
Pocket MadLib
Layout
Android app reviews like this are so much fun. The layout of this program is incredibly simplistic. I would say almost too simplistic, except for the fact it can’t be any more simplistic than carrying around a pencil and a pad, right? I suppose if the author of this application were trying to match the original art of MadLibbing, it makes sense to choose a vanilla layout. Alright, fair enough.
The main screen provides a list of various templates to use. Selecting one displays a white page with nothing but the information required to complete the MadLib. To show you, here’s a screenshot:
Yes, it really is that simplistic. The beauty of the layout, though, is that you are entering information blindly. Unlike in the original MadLib days, if you were the one filling it out, you knew what the story said. This makes creating a truly wild and unique story much easier, with no cheating allowed! Here is one I created just a few moments ago:
Personal Ad:
If you like Ugly walks on the Desk, Green Goth, and dinners at Grapes restaurants, I’m the Laptop for you. My favorite Car is Kansas, and my ideal Bike is Long and Wide, though if you like to Run, that’s even better. Me? 13 feet, 21 inches tall, Green hair, and a Sharp Eye. If you are Purple, please don’t reply. 555-8394
Nice, huh? I thought so too. Pocket MadLibs gets four stars for layout.
Features
There are a number of different MadLibs to choose from. Create your own infomercial, personal ad or postcard. Rewrite classic stories like ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, Alice in Wonderland, Aesop’s Fables, or Ozymandias. Not sure which one to pick? Simply select the ‘Random’ option. This is also a good way to keep from cheating!
After you finish writing your MadLib, you can either clear it to start over again or, if it was really good and you want to share the fun, choose to email the story to yourself. Unfortunately these are the only features at the moment. I would personally like to see some Facebook integration or the ability to save to Evernote, Catch, or any other notepad application on the user’s phone. For lack of additional features, Pocket MadLibs loses two stars.
Value
I downloaded the free app, although there is also a paid version. It appears the only difference though is banner advertising. I would rather just have the free app and deal with the ads, personally – especially since I don’t seem to gain any additional features with the paid version. For being a free app and bringing back the nostalgia, I award five stars for value.
