Written Android App Review

Emergency situations inspire a wide range of feelings: fear, compassion, anxiety and everything in between. It’s hard to know the correct course of action to take. The American Red Cross, developer Sharecare and Dr. Oz make responding to an emergency and contacting the proper authorities easier with their new S.O.S. app. Breathe easier this summer knowing help is just a touch away with this Android app.

Features

The S.O.S. emergency support Android app brought some pretty big names together in the name of public safety, though I’m not certain adding Dr. Oz to the mix adds any credibility to this Android app. Despite the celebrity shadow, I found S.O.S. by American Red Cross a feature-rich emergency app with a lot of useful information and resources.

During my Android app review I found direct links to emergency services in the S.O.S. app. There is also a helpful questionnaire you can walk through in the case of a real emergency. Answer a few very basic questions, be directed to the proper emergency response team, and then follow a link to emergency care information.

This Android app also has a rich video library with step by step instructions and audible walk throughs featuring Dr. Oz. If you retain information more easily in written form, the “Resource” section is a great place to find answers to emergency situation questions. The quality of information is way beyond basic. There are instructions on everything from sports injuries to using an automated external defibrillator on someone.

User Interface

A basic tab interface makes navigating S.O.S. by American Red Cross for Android easy. The “Emergency” button and tab lead to a step by step emergency process. Every screen has a convenient “Dial 911” option clearly marked. Videos and resources are organized by type of emergency. The resources tab even has a search bar.

Graphics and clear instructions improve the quality of this Android app. As a reviewer, I was a little paranoid that I would tap one of the abundant emergency buttons and call 911 by accident. I didn’t, thank goodness.

Value

S.O.S. by American Red Cross is a free application. This lifesaving information and useful course on basic aid and emergency response is worth taking a few minutes to look over. Download this app before you need it. I suggest familiarizing yourself with the application when you download it, reading through some resources and learning through the videos. Preventing an emergency and saving a life is a priceless skill.
