Written Android App Review

TripIt! Where have you been all my life?!?! This is the Android app I’ve been dreaming of! Being from Alaska, yet living in Tennessee, means that travel is the name of the game around my house. And we’ve had it all! The good trips…the bad trips…and the trips that left us sitting on a curb in Chicago at 3 in the morning. Not to mention the ones that dragged out for the better part of a week when they should have been over and down with in about 12 hours. Yep….done that too!

But just look at this Android app! To have all of my travel information in one central location is like having a perfect dinner served up to me on a silver platter. Flight times, delays and rescheduling options (Plus OH so much more!) all in one easy to use Android app? It’s like a dream that I didn’t even know that I had until they showed it to me. And, if I’m this excited about an Android app, then it had better live up to the hype. If not….then I will NOT be pleased!

Features

Let’s start this Android app review with the high points, shall we? TripIt is absolutely PACKED with features. More features than you could ever use and plenty of features that you will wish you have always had. With this one easy to use Android app you will have the ability to automatically create itineraries, view them anywhere, add maps and driving directions, sync frequent flyer accounts, get refunds, view alerts and even find alternate flights. As in….you can do all of this…in the airport….while you are moving from one gate to another.

That is priceless!

And, it better be….because it’s not free. This brings us to the low points. When I first found TripIt in the Android Market, I was under the impression that it was a free app…and it is, but there is a pretty big catch. If you want the Pro version, which is where just about all of the amazing features come into play, then it’s going to cost you $49 a year after the free 30 day trial. That’s pretty steep. In the end it will truly depend on how much you actually travel as to whether or not the cost is worth the benefit.

Remember, there is a free version, its just not nearly as action packed as the Pro.

Functionality

TripIt

In terms of functionality I am squarely in the middle of the road. The high middle, but still the middle. The TripIt Android app worked well it just didn’t work all the time. The Android app force closed a handful of times during the review and introduced me to a few other bugs along the way.

Now, I will balance this out by saying that when it worked…it worked great! It just didn’t work consistently. However I truly feel that this is an issue that will be taken care of as the developer moves forward, it will just take patience and time, something that many Android users are in short supply of.

WoW Factor

Overall TripIt is a great Android app. It offers a HUGE number of features for the frequent traveler and ones that could be invaluable in the right situation. To me? It’s worth the money. But remember, I am one of those people who have found themselves sitting on a curb at 3am wondering what to do for the next 10 hours until I could get another flight. Had I been quicker, or had the kind of information that TripIt can offer, I might not have found myself in that situation at all.

But to someone who doesn’t travel like I do? I may not be worth it in the least.

I would say that the best idea is to give the free trial a spin and see for yourself if this is an Android app that will work for you. It won’t cost you a thing and it might just turn a travel nightmare into the trip of your dreams!
