Written Android App Review
Grenadier, by developer BitWhiz, is a new physics puzzler Android app, in the same vein as Angry Birds and Shoot U! The Android app offers a new twist on the ever-blooming style of gameplay, but though it features excellent level design, Grenadier is plagued with off-putting controls and odd physics. Lets thrust ourselves into the Android app review.
Gameplay
The gameplay of Grenadier is fairly straightforward: You play as a rogue commander armed only with grenades in the face of a very strategically placed army. On each level you must blow up the South Park-esque enemies either one at a time or en masse. Once all the baddies are gone, you’re passed on to the next level. If you fail to complete the mission with the specified number of ‘nades, the level will fail you. To score higher, beat the level with fewer wasted munitions.
Grenadier
Grenadier owes a lot of its gameplay to its predecessors, most notably Angry Birds. However, where others succeeded before it, Grenadier’s controls are not quite spot-on. I found it difficult to place a grenade exactly where I wanted it, as the controls are both picky and finicky. Gauging the exact amount of power being put into a throw is challenging at best, and can lead to some interesting results—not all of them wanted. The game does keep things interesting by adding exploding crates and Time Warp blocks, though the levels still feel a tad anemic. The developers promise more content is coming—hopefully more levels, as well as different grenades and enemies—so all is not sunk just yet.
Design
As stated, Grenadier suffers from some often sketchy controls. Thankfully, the game’s levels make up for a lot of its faults. The placement of baddies is usually top-notch, and the puzzles are just challenging enough to require some forethought, but not so bad as to be impossible. Glitches figure heavily into the app’s physics, however. Several times, I would blow up a stack of crates, only to find myself completely covered in them and unable to lob more explosives. Not only that, but the physics themselves can be a bit off and unpredictable. I was never quite sure where an enemy would fly, or how a grenade would impact an obstacle, making strategizing difficult to say the least.
Overall Value
However, at the end of the day, Grenadier is one-hundred percent free in the Android Market. As a shoot-off in the Angry Birds tree, the app offers a lot of promise with future updates. The gameplay here is short (18 levels) but fun, and with more content coming down the pipes, there’s no wrong time to give Grenadier a shot.
