Written Android App Review

Learning the names of different animals can be a great experience for young children. Animals are fascinating for small children and getting know and recognize them can be a valuable tool. There are loads of different Android apps to help your kids learn their animals, but Animal Book, available for free, is one of the better ones available. Don’t be fooled by its simplicity-it’s a stellar teaching app for children.

Features

Animal Book Android app allows the user to choose from either Learning or Quiz. Tapping on Learning will let the user browse a picture list of all the different animals included in the app. There is a grand total of 38 different animals with color illustrations for each one to choose from.

Quiz mode lets you hear the name of the animal and then guess at which picture shows it. The Android app is probably best used with children first getting to know the animals from the Learn feature, then tackling the Quiz mode when they are ready for a challenge.

Graphical Layout and Sounds

Animal Book sports a fairly simple layout that is quite easy to navigate. With just two main options at start up (Learn and Quiz), Animal Book may appear lacking in options. Still, the layout still looks great and the lack of options don’t hurt this kid-friendly app. Instead, adults will probably find the simple layout helpful in letting their younger children use the app.

Illustrations are pretty cute and definitely will appeal to children! I was pleased with Animal Book’s attempt to keep their layout and graphics very slick, even for a children’s app.

Audio files included with Animal Book are pretty simple yet solid. Basically, you can tap a button in the learn mode to hear the name of each animal. In quiz mode, you will be presented with several different pictures of animals with no text. A voice then says the name of one animal on screen and it is up to you to tap the correct animal. The voice is quite clear and really easy to understand.

Value

For an educational children application, Animal Book is pretty decent. While it may not rock the features of some of the more complex teaching apps for kids, Animal Book still offers a wide selection of animals for viewing. The dual mode function (learn or quiz) is quite valuable and really helps make Animal Book a solid app. The art and layout are attractive and easy to navigate, even for younger children familiar with tech. Best of all, Animal Book is available for free!
