I love the idea of a dinner bell. The idea that one simple sound can bring everyone together to share a meal and spend some time just talking about their day. It reminds of a time when things moved a bit more slowly and life was meant to be savored rather than survived.
Now the people of Lawry’s have taken this down home staple and upgraded it straight to the 21st century. How? By making themselves right at home on your Android device! Their new Lawry’s Digital Dinner Bell Android app uses the idea of the classic dinner bell and amps it up with a whole new twist. One that will bring the fun back to your daily dinner routine.

Talk about giving the dinner bell a reboot! With the Lawry’s Digital Dinner Bell you can call your whole family to the table with nothing more than a quick shake or tap of your phone.
Here’s how it works. Start by setting up your “family” in the Lawry’s Digital Dinner Bell Android app, as well as how you would like for the app to contact them. You can choose between text, automated phone call or even Facebook. Then, when you ring the bell, each family member will be contacted in their own special way.
When I sprang this little surprise on my own family each one of them came to the table with a smile on their face. What a great way to start dinner and what a great way to bring us all together.
What do I love? First I love the whole “themed” bells. They add a bit of unexpected fun to the mix. I also love that you can search recipes and get new ideas to spice up your dinner routine. Keep in mind that these recipes are centered around Lawry’s products, but they can give you a place to start whether you have any Lawry’s in your pantry or not.

Functionalty was a bit of a gray area for Lawry’s Digital Dinner Bell but the Android app performed well overall. I did experience a few force closes but the app did not lock up and the issues seemed to be isolated rather than constant.
The real problem here, and the one that is hard for me to overlook are the permissions. The permissions list is pretty deep and there are several that seem to be nothing more than fishing expeditions. Fishing….as in for your personal information. Yep, that’s one that always makes me happy.
Dinner Saver
Here’s the bottom line. I LOVE this Android app. Love it! Love the idea of bringing the family together to share a meal and love the idea of having a kind of one stop dinner shop ready and waiting in my Android device.
Here’s the problem…..the permissions. As much as I love the Lawry’s Digital Dinner Bell Android app, I just can’t accept the permissions that come lurking in the background.
And why should I? Why should I be forced to open up my Android device, and thus my life, to any fun app that offers me something different? An Android app that is ethical, one that isn’t trying to pull the hunter gather routine on my Android doesn’t need all those permissions. They realize that their apps can stand on their own.
When Lawry’s ditches the permissions and let’s their Android app speak for its self, then I will be the first one in line to download. Until then? Uninstall.
