Written Android App Review
Running games are a dime a dozen in the Android Market, and it’s rare that a breath of fresh air enters the genre. But Wizard Rush Android app, by developer Mouse Games, certainly fits into that elusive bubble, offering classic platforming fun combined with an immense game world. The Android app is guaranteed to enliven a boring commute (or office meeting) and is easily worth a test drive.
Concept and Gameplay
Wizard Rush
The developers define Wizard Rush’s gameplay as “simple but skillful,” a description I thought particularly effective. The game has you playing as a student at the questionably named Hogwards School of Witchcraft and Wizardry as he flees from an off-screen menace. As your character runs along the levels, you tap the screen to flip gravity, having him float up and down between platforms. Get stuck, though, and the game runs you over with a big-fat-fail. Miss a platform, and our hapless sorcerer either sails off into the clouds or sinks to his doom. All throughout, you’re also charged with collecting stars, which increase your score.
It’s classic running gameplay at its best, and it can be quite difficult at times. Managing the oncoming paths, enemies and obstacles is a challenge, and collecting all of the stars is nearly impossible sometimes. During my review, I thought Wizard Rush’s experience very solid, though not bug-free. Occasionally the game would restart the level for no apparent, creating a very frustrating glitch. This is likely due to lag, which plagued the app occasionally. Hopefully future updates will improve performance, as suddenly being bumped back to the beginning of a long run can certainly be a hair-pulling aggravation.
Design and Graphics
Perhaps Wizard Rush’s biggest strength is its level design: The platforms, stars and enemies have been placed very expertly, creating a challenge that’s hard but not so difficult as to be off-putting. Likewise, the graphics themselves are excellent. Levels are fluid and feature excellent magical themes. Speaking of levels, you’ll get forty five of them here. That means there’s more than enough running gameplay to keep you occupied for a long time. The replay value depends on how much you enjoy the game, as well as how many stars you fail to collect during your first pass. Though an entire second play through seems unlikely for most users, one could easily pop back into any old level and have a blast. On top of all that, more worlds are promised in future updates, meaning the game’s content will only get bigger and better.
Overall Value and Fun
Wizard Rush is free in the Android Market, and offers a ton of good content. If you enjoy running games, or just want a quick steal to occupy your morning commute, the game is a value option. And with more levels on the way, you’ll only have more excuses to dive back in and run a few stars.
