Written Android App Review
There are few culinary experiences that top eating from a killer food truck. These bad boys aren’t just touting hot dogs and pretzels these days.
Over the past decade gastronomists in many metropolitan areas have turned the act of cooking street food into an art form. And an amazing new Android app called Gastrodamus is here to help you feast on the street.
This app has my mouth watering. Hope you’re hungry for an Android app review of Gastrodamus, the street food finding wonder app.
Features
Gastrodamus
The concept of Gastrodamus is pretty simple. Most popular food trucks announce their daily locations to loyal followers via Twitter. Gastrodamus trolls these feeds all day to let you know when your favorite food truck will appear, and where.
Integration with Google Maps helps you pin point the exact location of local food trucks. Not only does the Gastrodamus app tell you where they’ll be, it plugs you directly in to the vendor’s Twitter feed. It even populates contact information for phone ahead orders and links you to the food truck’s website.
It only took me a few moments to start salivating thinking about Eddie’s Pizza NY’s truck on 46th and 4th in Manhattan, and positively drooling considering today’s location for Cupcake Stop’s wares. The next time I head to a big city, this app is coming with me.
Practical Application
Food trucks are an extremely popular source of nosh for locals. I think Gastrodamus Android app will help even the field for visitors as well. Don’t spend $6 on a lousy hot dog outside of the Natural History Museum in Manhattan. Go around the corner and dine on divine Chinese dumplings or a delicious schnitzel.
Gastrodamus will have a positive impact on vendors as well. Sure, they may be bustling during the lunch rush, but this app could keep them busy longer, meaning more moolah in their pockets.
Of course the practical application of this app is slightly limited because it depends on the business updating Twitter with their current location, or at least putting it on their linked website. Smart businesses do this, and I hope it catches on.
Layout & Design
Gastrodamus
You won’t starve waiting on the Gastrodamus Android app, it is easy to navigate through your city on the interactive map. An interactive map with orange cards highlighting local food vendors popped up in seconds. Or, use the list functionality. If you prefer Twitter-friendly vendors you can also search by the most recent update to see who’s got the freshest dish.
I really like the design of this app. A city street motif helps keep it all in perspective, and business icons brighten up search results. Kudos to Gastrodamus for keeping it real while giving us the low down on dinner.
Value
Gastrodamus currently monitors trucks in New York City, Lost Angeles, San Franciso, Washington DC, Portland and the greater Boston area. I wish they had Atlanta and Miami on the list, but understand the constraints.
Limitations aside, Gastrodamus is an extremely intelligently designed and useful application. I think that makes it priceless. Oh, and it certainly helps that the app is free.
