Swamp Defense, by developer EntwicklerX, is a down-home, country-themed tower defense title for the Android platform that’s worth its weight in gumbo. The wide variety of enemies, as well as the rock-paper-scissors style units, create a winning strategic combination that comes at a great price. Concept and Gameplay

Swamp Defense Android app
As stated, Swamp Defense is more or less a classic tower defense game repackaged for the Android platform. Players are presented with a winding path leading toward an unseen object of importance. Swamp monsters appear in waves, and troll their way down the aforementioned road, leaving it up to the user to stop them. To do so, players will need to purchase various units, each with their own special abilities, upgrade options, and down-home name. Players can position troops wherever they so please, and once placed, the user’s country-fied soldiers will blast away until enemies have moved out of their range. It’s tower defense in a traditional and fun fashion, even if it comes with little to no frills.
Swamp Defense does come packed with a rather impressive number of levels, each with an intimidating number of waves. In fact, I often felt like the stages were too stretched out: As fun as Swamp Defense is, the gameplay is worn slick after thirty waves of the same enemies.
This is a motif for the rest of the app, too. I particularly enjoyed the variety of troops available, but players will be relying on the same tactics and arrangements for most of the game. This isn’t so much a level design problem, or even a game concept failure, as it is a lack of a certain carrot on a stick to keep the game fresh.
Design and Graphics
Swamp Defense’s graphics are pleasantly country, offering levels designed to include rusted out cars and used tires. The enemy sprites are lively and decently animated, while the various units available for purchase are cleverly designed, as well.
I very greatly appreciated the presence of Open Feint integration, as the available leader boards and achievements add a much needed replay incentive. I would have liked to see a bit more variety in level design, however. Each stage uses the same graphical elements, just rearranged for slightly different strategies. It’s a decent way to do things, and it doesn’t affect gameplay much, but having totally new areas for play through would have been a tremendous boon.
Overall Value
At the end of the day, Swamp Defense is easily worth the € .99 (about $1.25 for you Americans) it costs in the Android Market. The game is big on depth, and though repetitive at times, certainly worth a test-drive during the morning commute. If you’re a fan of the genre, you’ll find a lot to love as well within Swamp Defense’s hokey halls.
