Written Android App Review

Pixlr-o-matic, by developer Autodesk (Think SketchBook Mobile and AutoCad—yeah, AutoCad) is the kind of Android app we love to see in the Android Market: It’s fast, efficient, and streamlined as heck. If you’re looking for an Instagram-esque experience on the Android platform, and don’t want to fool with sluggish Mobli or Lightbox, the app is a must-have. It’s not yet a completely integrated experience, but it’s better than nothing, and certainly an improvement on most. Let’s take a look at our Android app review.

Concept and Functionality

Pixlr-o-matic

Like Instagram and Mobli, or any of those other thousand photography sharing apps for iOS or Android, Pixlr-o-matic makes it easy to snap a photo, apply a retro-styled filter, and then export like crazy to your favorite social networking sites. The camera itself has been spared as the focus of the app, considering Pixlr-o-matic defaults to your phone’s stock application.

Where Pixlr-o-matic truly shines is its copious amounts of overlays and filters. The app comes with enough color filters to choke a horse, which when combined with the lighting filters and borders, adds up to a whopping 25,000 different possible combinations. That’s got a leg up even on Instagram, and to top it all off, Pixlr-o-matic is blazing fast. The app is quicker to render its filters than Lightbox, and though we haven’t done any scientific speed testing, we’d be willing to bet it can go head to head with any other competitor in the Market. A camera isn’t a necessity, either: The app supports loading photos from the camera roll with full access to the barrage of filters and effects.

All in all, Pixlr-o-matic is rock-solid, offering one of the best photo sharing experiences we’ve ever seen. However, exporting is still a bit of a hiccup: Though the app allows users to post their photos to almost every service imaginable, we’d still like a more comprehensive online repository for our images, à la Lightbox. Thankfully, there’s at least support for imm.io.

Design and Graphics

Even better, Pixlr-o-matic looks absolutely fantastic on our Android devices. The app features a gun metal gray look that suits it well, while making full use of the popular sliding effects bar, as seen in other iOS apps before it.

Either way, the thing behaves admirably, and we couldn’t’ get it to choke, no matter how hard we prodded. The effects are stellar to boot, offering some truly inspirational mobile photography potential.

Overall Value

No matter how you slice it, Pixlr-o-matic is solid. If you’re looking for the next best (or better) thing to Instagram on the Android platform, this one here’s a winner. Best of all, Pixlr-o-matic won’t cost you a dime to use or acquire. If that’s not a steamy recommendation, we don’t know what is. If you shoot pictures with your phone, get this app.
