Written Android App Review
Stay safe while you drive with the iOnRoad Android app. This app won the 2011 Mobile Summit, and with good reason. Utilizing augmented reality technology iOnRoad helps you avoid collisions while you drive, just like expensive advanced collision warning systems found in many top end vehicles, but without breaking the bank.
Want to get your hands on an app that might actually save your life? Our Android app review of iOnRoad can show you how.

Augmented reality utilizes your Android’s camera to project a real time image of what is in front of you onto your screen. Attach your Android to your windshield with a mount that leaves your camera exposed then run the app.
Through a snazzy set of complex algorithms, iOnRoad uses the camera to calculate your distance from the car in front of you. An automatic alert system will warn you when the distance between cars and your speed are getting dangerous. The screen turns yellow, or red if you’re in real danger, and an audible alert chimes.
iOnRoad can also work with hands free commands, integrate music or radio applications, and run effortlessly in the background while you use navigation or make phone calls. Bluetooth integration ensures you hear the warnings loud and clear.
The app is also quite customizable, supports metric and imperial measurements, and can be set up to run automatically every time you drive.
Layout & Design

Access to navigation, phone functions and music is tucked nearly in a side menu, while direction and a snapshot option (handy for accidents) are nearly translucent. For international ease, the menu can be adjusted to appear on the left or right hand side of the screen.
Using the app is easy and hands-free options make it safer than most apps you might be tempted to use in the car.
Functionality
According to developers the iOnRoad Android app comes with day and night vision support. Some reviewers have experienced issues with the app’s nighttime performance, so it’s worth mentioning.
It’s also very important that you have the right kind of mount to run this app. Too much hood in the frame can cause the app to malfunction. iOnRoad sells camera-friendly car mounts specifically made for their app, if you’re interested.
Value
Make no mistake, iOnRoad is an amazing value. It does the job of a car add-on that can cost upwards of $1,000, and it does it for free. The only downside to using this app instead of a built in warning system is the possible loss of windshield real estate. That’s a simple sacrifice to make for increased driving safety.
