Princess Punt: Written Android App Review

The Princess Punt Android app claims to be a new game genre, called an action puzzle RPG. While there is a healthy dose of action, and a certain amount of puzzle and RPG in the game, I prefer to think of it as the ultimate dose of girl power for your Android.

Why do boys get to have all the fun? Princess Punt is the kind of game that challenges that stereotype, while managing to be an extremely fun game that utilizes some mechanics we all know and love.

A typical Japanese anime style intro gives you some good background on the situation, that’s where the RPG part of the app comes in mostly. A lovely princess, decked out in a frilly pink frock, faces waves of monsters as she wanders her kingdom. And, naturally, she’s going to defend her land.

With a swift kick, this princess sends her knights into battle. You’ll use an Angry Birds style slingshot move to aim her kick, landing knights strategically to take out the bad guys. Once your knights are in place they’ll take a swing (or launch an arrow, etc) at the monsters, while you hurl bombs from the sidelines. That’s where the action part of this game comes into play.

As far as puzzles go, some levels do have towers you can knock down and there are coins to collect with flying objects as well. It seems like a bit of an afterthought, and is one of the main features that give this game an Angry Birds rip off feel.

Beating mobs earns orbs. Use orbs to upgrade your knights abilities, and max out their points on equipped items for extra XP.

Layout & Design

Princess Punt

There’s a strong anime style throughout the game, which is simply and clearly designed. Navigation is really easy because the game sort of man handles you though the process of accessing levels, upgrading stats and changing equipment.

After a while the constant need to upgrade something or use an orb gets a bit annoying. Pages take more time to load than I’d like, causing the game to drag a bit. Still, I’m ecstatic to see a female hero taking center stage for once. Overlooking a few functionality issues is the least I can do.

Value

Like most of my favorite Android apps, Princess Punt is free to download and play. It’s also some serious fun. C’mon, watching a girl in a pink dress punt kick knights into battle? Sign me up, because that’s the sort of game I can get into.

Don’t be afraid boys. This game really is a lot of fun and a nice twist on several boring sling shot style aiming apps. The action is good, levels are different and progress is easy. So give Princess Punt for Android a try. It’ll be love at first kick.
