The stress ball is an eternal figure in our workplace. What better way is there to thrash, mangle, and mold something to your will in a cathartic release of pent-up frustration? Beat Your Boss Pro, by developer Electric Seed, works in much the same way, allowing you to blow off steam through the physical abuse of a lifeless avatar. Concept and Gameplay

As mentioned, Beat Your Boss Pro is most analogous to those stress balls that grow like weeds in cubicles mazes. The app presents the user with a customizable figurehead (which is, literally, a head) to slap, abuse, and misshape to their delight. There’s a fair amount of customization involved, as the user is free to not only choose the head they’d like to hit, but also the shape. We greatly appreciated the free-transform functionality, which allowed us to warp the jaw and forehead of the figure on a whim. It’s a small touch, but it certainly makes the end experience much more rewarding. We also appreciated the fact that we’re free to choose our own images to use in-app. One really could beat up their boss, assuming they have a crop-enabled picture stored in their photo gallery.

The game mechanic itself is rather simple, however. The user simply slaps or shakes the phone to abuse the doll. Each hit earns a set amount of points, and if the punch is held for a small amount of time, a larger point value is returned. A timer tracks the player’s progress, adding an high-score element to the mix. There’s also a free mode, which allows the player to abuse at will, relieving stress in the process.

Design and Graphics

All in all, we quite liked the graphics Beat Your Boss Pro is sporting. High-definition perhaps isn’t the word to use, but the cartoony faces and various backgrounds were quite suited to the gameplay itself. Likewise, the control scheme is easy to navigate, requiring only a finger and the will to hurt. However, we are slightly concerned about the app’s replay value. As fun as beating your boss is, we wonder how many players will return again and again to the app. It’s unlikely to fill a morning commute for months on end, though beyond a doubt, it certainly fills the same need as a stress ball.

Overall Value

Priced at a very comfortable $1.32 in the Android Market, Beat Your Boss Pro is easily worth the price of entry. If you’re looking for a quick and convenient way to abuse a virtual avatar, or even photos of your friends or bosses, there’s no more cost-efficient way to do so than with Beat Your Boss Pro. At the end of the day, the app is a solid blast and earns our full recommendation.
