In terms of genre, very few areas have been more underserved (no pun intended) than the puzzler on the Android platform. We aren’t sure what it is about physics games that get the Droid dollar more, but we always find ourselves wishing for just a little more brain work and a little less finger-flicking. Thankfully, the good folks out at Oblique Diversions understand our needs, and have offered up the stellar puzzle game Cafe Five. If you’re looking for an incredible way to shred the morning commute on your Android phone, we can hardly think of a better option than this free app in the Android Market. Concept and Gameplay

As mentioned, Cafe Five very squarely falls within the category of “puzzler” for the Android platform. The game come with a deceptively simple concept that takes only seconds to learn, but quite a long, long time to master: Users are tasked with dragging and dropping various number pieces, adding them up into combinations of five. When enough sets of five have been created, they can be tapped to be eliminated, freeing up more space on the game board and advancing the gameplay. Each level offers a unique combination of numbers that must be navigated, requiring an insane amount of forethought and strategy, as there’s only one solution per set. If you fail to find the proper path, the game hands you a burn notice, which equates to a Big Fat Fail.

Best of all, there’s a mountain of gameplay to work through. Cafe Five comes with a staggering number of levels, as well as several additional board sizes available via in-app purchase. Considering the app is free, this amount of play is quite unprecedented, and is guaranteed to fill many a boring afternoon.

Design and Layout

We have to admit, the app’s design is quite easy on the eyes, to boot. We especially liked the food-style game pieces that go alongside the cafe metaphor. Likewise, the drag-and-drop mechanic is easy to navigate, and makes the game concept flow effortlessly. We weren’t such big fans of the banner adverts that rest along the top of the main menu, but considering we didn’t have to pay a thing to enjoy Cafe Five’s stellar gameplay, we suppose we’ll have to swallow our complaints and instead get to puzzling.

What more can we say: Cafe Five is completely free in the Android Market! If you’ve been looking for an incredible puzzler to rock as you wait in the queue at the theater, Cafe Five is a bloody marvelous solution. Best of all, it comes with a mountain of content and a simple concept that lends itself to incredible complexity. And if that doesn’t ring itself as a recommendation, we don’t know what will!
