Majesty: Northern Expansion: Video Android App Review
We feel like we should pony up to our proclivities: We’re total suckers for anything and everything real-time strategy. We can’t count the number of hours we’ve spent in front of a computer screen playing Warcraft, and that’s just one series on one platform. No matter how you slice it, though, we’re tremendous fans of the genre, which is why we’re absolutely enamored with Majesty: Northern Expansion, by renowned Android developer HeroCraft. The app is a near perfect approximation of what an RTS should be on the mobile platform, and if you happen to be rocking an Android tablet, we’d be surprised if you ever left the armchair again. Concept and Gameplay
Majesty Northern Expansion for Android
If you have ever played an RTS before, especially one made by Blizzard, then you have a fairly good grasp on what Majesty: Northern Expansion comes loaded with. The app brings us all the staples of the genre and more, including building construction and renovation, collectible resources and money grubbing, varied and wild enemies to be dealt with, richly upgradeable units, and—of course—dragons. However, all of this is fairly standard faire for the genre, so what does Majesty: Northern Expansion bring to the table in terms of mobile performance?
First and foremost, Majesty: Northern Expansion features a form of “indirect” control that’s brilliantly simple and powerfully optimized for mobile devices. In this system, units attack, collect, and perform on their own, but are based around central buildings. To expand, the player does not so much send a scout party, as literally grow their empire into the region. Likewise, buildings themselves, as well as their units, are the focus of the conquests. Each individual roost can be upgraded to truly staggering heights, and as research buildings crank out improvements, your troops across the board benefit. It’s an ingenious system, and one we literally cannot get enough of. Historically, RTS ports have not faired well on the Android platform: Majesty: Northern Expansion blows that hype right out of the water.
Design and Depth
Best of all, the game features some of the best graphics we’ve ever seen in the genre on the Android platform. We loved how enemies can be seen spawning across the map: Our favorite was watching dragons shake the snow off their backs. Likewise, the newly introduced Northern environments are gorgeous, offering real-time weather, varied terrains, and heaps of enemies. If you’re concerned about customization, too, you have no need to fret. Majesty: Northern Expansion comes loaded with more upgrades, items, heroes, and buildings than one could easily sort through in a single play. In other words, the app is big, beautiful, and totally killer.
Overall Value
Usually, we’d patter on about the value of the price tag, but here we think it’s best to make an exception. For the $2.99 the app costs, it’s an unbelievable bargain. If you’re a fan of the RTS genre, and own an Android device, there is no question in our minds: You bloody need this app, period.
