Gameplay

Cannon Legend is definitely one of the best-made apps we’ve seen yet this year. It features varied gameplay with multiple control options (tilt or tap and drag). Utilizing a simple shoot control you’ll battle back wave after wave of 3D baddies in this straightforward yet addictive title. There’s also an element of RPG here, with an ongoing storyline of good versus evil and some crazy bosses.
Most of all, Cannon Legend is just fun to play. We think the game has a few functionality issues (more about that in a moment) but its concept and design are quite solid, especially for a game that’s entirely free.
As you play you’ll earn coins, which can be used to keep your health and mana bars full during a round or spent on nifty upgrades, giving you more fire power and defense. There are a few boosts you can enable during gameplay, for defense and attacks. And trust us, after a few rounds you’re going to need the help.
Functionality
Cannon Legend
As promised, we have a few things to say about Cannon Legend’s functionality. The game itself operates quite well through the intro and menus, but the screen can get a bit busy and subsequently laggy during the rounds, even though we were running it on an Android with a 1 Ghz Hummingbird processor. While it’s not the top of the class, it handles games like Star Legends and others with high quality graphical content quite well, so we were a bit disappointed.
Also, we think the game’s drag controls are a bit unresponsive, which can cause some serious damage to your character. We’re not huge fans of tilt controls, especially when you need to shoot and enable special attacks, so the Cannon Legend user interface could use a bit of an upgrade.
Overall Value
You owe it to yourself to check out Cannon Legend. It’s a very cool game, despite our functionality qualms. We think with a little work this app might be one of our favorites of 2012, and look forward to improvements as the year goes on.
