Written Android App Review

In the new Seal the Monsters Android game it is your job to gather up a gaggle of roving monsters in circles. This was actually a new concept for us, so we were a little excited to perform an Android app review of Seal the Monsters. Let’s see how the game holds up under scrutiny.

Gameplay

Reviewed by Valerie Lauer

There are two main gameplay modes in Seal the Monsters for Android. In one you race the clock to capture as many monsters as you can. The other is a bit less clearly defined. Apparently it’s a survival mode and you’re supposed to keep the monsters to a minimum by circling and getting rid of them before they turn into “packs.”

If we sound a bit confused, that’s because Seal the Monsters isn’t the simplest game out there, and isn’t really clearly explained in the app. Your job is to draw a circle with your finger around monsters. If a monster runs into your circle before it’s finished then your work is undone. Larger monsters require more energy in the circle that’s going to destroy them, and may need to be circled two or three times.

There are bonuses and boosts you can collect by completing combos, but no matter what we did we couldn’t figure out what they actually did.

Seal the Monsters supports singleplayer mode and several different multiplayer options, either locally via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi or online. As variety goes, it’s there, but the whole time we were playing we just felt like we weren’t getting it.

Layout & Design

Seal the Monsters

As we’ve established, gameplay is a little confusing in Seal the Monsters. That’s due, in part, to the fact that you literally can’t read the font the app uses in its help file. This game’s graphics are extremely simple and a bit rough. We’re unimpressed.

Functionality

Gameplay can get pretty choppy in this app, so it’s no big surprise that it freezes from time to time. Also, the game’s ad banner makes it almost impossible to play the game correctly since it blocks out the lower left-hand corner of the screen. I understand offering a paid upgrade to remove ads (hey, even developers have to eat) but making the game unplayable due to ads is pretty low. So instead of calling it a ploy for your cash, we’ll say it’s a functionality issue. Advertisements make the game function quite poorly.

Overall Value

We don’t say this very often, but it’s a good thing Seal the Monsters is a free app. It’s an interesting idea, especially due to all the unlockable features and extras. But in the end it’s too poorly made and frustrating to play, so we’re going to suggest passing on this app unless you love broken English and have a big thing for drawing circles on your screen.
