Concept and Functionality

Audiobooks Now

Audiobooks Now, as if the title didn’t already say so, provides a quick and convenient way to find and purchase audiobooks from your Android phone or tablet. For those seriously not in the no, audiobooks are books that have been recorded by a professional narrator, who reads the book in an unabridged fashion. This formatting is ideal for the reader that travels a lot in the car, or who simply enjoys hearing their favorite books dramatized by an actor. The app itself makes it easy to find these titles, offering a plethora of genres, authors, and books to choose from. These can be found either using the built-in search bar, or via the hefty list of genres and authors. Once discovered, a book can be purchased with the simple touch of a button, though each offering also comes with a sample, in case you’re hesitant to spend money. All in all, we greatly enjoyed the Audiobooks Now, though we did find the app a bit slow between tabs. Likewise, prices are not initially listed, and though the app makes it easy to store your media, there’s no word yet on DRM protection.

Design and Layout

Overall, we greatly enjoyed the style and feel of Audiobooks Now. The app features an excellent black, red, and white color tone that reminded us a lot of the Barnes and Noble Nook. However, we weren’t such fans of the aforementioned sluggishness. The app often chugged in-between tabs, and though searches performed well, they also tended to be a bit slow. Media playback is a breeze, however, which thankfully is quite the selling point in Audiobooks Now’s favor.

Overall Value

Audiobooks Now itself is a free app in the Android Market, but it also comes with a $5 monthly subscription. Granted, that’s a fairly low price for the chance to purchase high-quality audiobooks from your phone, but when compared to other (more established) services like Audible, Audiobooks Now might be an hard sell. The joy you get out of the app also largely depends on the amount of audiobooks you consumer in a month’s time. All in all, it’s a solid offering for the dedicated fan, and a decent value for the casual listener.
