Romance of Rome: Written Android App Review
Do you like the ye olden and now classic Where’s Waldo Games? Better yet, do you pine daily for an application that delivers the same sort of iSpy gameplay you enjoy directly to your Android? If so, then you’re in luck! The incredibly popular and ever-present desktop series Romance of Rome (HeroCraft) has finally arrived on the Android platform, bringing along with it a world of stellar item-hunting gameplay that’s been punctuated with beautiful graphics. It’s a compelling package, and if you’ve been looking for an hunt-and-peck time waster, Romance of Rome will be your new best mate.
Concept and Gameplay
Romance of Rome for Android
If you’ve ever played an item finding game before Romance of Rome—or if you’ve played the series on any number of the supported platforms—then you likely already have quite the handle on how the game works. Essentially, the user is presented with a Roman styled room filled with assorted objects. The player is then charged with finding a certain group of these items. To do so, they’ll need to tap and poke at the layout until the item springs forth, ready made. Certain items also allow the user to, more or less, purchase influence within Rome. This becomes increasingly important as the title wears on, as you’ll need it to progress through the game. We weren’t completely stoked with this way of handling things (we’re much bigger on the pure item finding fun) but we do appreciate the fact that it adds an additional layer to a package that some users may find somewhat off-putting. Either way, you’re still looking at a mountain of solid gameplay, especially for fans of the series who simply cannot get enough item hunting madness. The game is also quite hard, in case you were hoping for a challenge.
Design and Graphics
We honestly can’t stress this enough: The graphics in Romance of Rome are drop-dead gorgeous. Within the genre, high-quality artwork is something of a must, and we’re absolutely stoked to see that Romance of Rome has pulled it off well here on the Android platform. The colors pop, the levels are clever, and the items pleasantly obscured. All in all, it’s a wonderful package, and though the story could be somewhat more important in the entire face of the game, we aren’t going to complain about a lack of focus on the killer puzzles.
Overall Value
If you’re looking for hours upon hours of item finding gameplay, the two dollar price tag for Romance of Rome is certainly a bargain. We loved the difficulty, the impressive levels, and above all, the commute killing item-nabbing gameplay. If all of that sounds like a bargain to you, then we couldn’t agree more. Snag Romance of Rome for a brilliant afternoon spent hunting ancient artifacts (and occasionally just plain junk!)
