Glowium: Written and Video Android App Review

It’s not much of a secret around here that we sort of go ape for any puzzler that’s willing to throw us an intellectual bone. However, that doesn’t mean we haven’t got standards, or that we can’t pick the diamonds out of the rough! With that in mind, may we introduce to you now one of our favorite new puzzlers for the Android platform, Glowium by developer JPenza. The app is a delightful combination of untwisting gameplay, hardcore puzzling, and gorgeous design. Best of all, the free edition comes with 100 levels and minimal adverts! For our full review of this excellent puzzling application for your Android phone, check below beyond the break!

Concept and Gameplay

Glowium for Android

The basic idea behind Glowium goes something like this: With each level, the user is presented with a series of point, as well as a large shape to which they’ve all been mapped. The idea is that the player will drag the points around until they perfectly match all the bound points of the shape. However, this is made slightly harder by the fact that the points themselves have been mixed up in some sort of pre-game twister. Now, the player’s task is two-fold: To understand the way in which the pieces have been jumbled, and to move them about in such a way that they ultimately fall directly into place.

The concept works well across the entire scope of the game, and can actually become quite difficult at the latter end of the title. In fact, we might even go so far as to call the game “damn hard.” We’re not particularly brilliant and unscrambling things, but even with that in mind, we still believe that Glowium is one of the hardest puzzler games available on the market. Thankfully, all this difficult has been offset by cute illustrations of Internet memes and stars!

Design and Graphics

In terms of raw design, Glowium is certainly one of the more minimalistic puzzlers we’ve seen in recent memory. The interface itself is stark and functional, offering buttons to reset the level, obtain a hint, or change the look of the puzzle. On that note, we particularly liked the walkthrough hints, which helped to remove much of the pressure inherent to this sort of game. In other areas, the game’s puzzles have been quite cleverly designed, and we have to hand it to the developers for working up one tough nut to crack. Even better, though, the graphics are bright and engaging—we were also particularly fond of the Reddit-laden Internet memes option.

Overall Value

If any of this sounds like a good time to you, then boogie on, Reggae Woman! The app is free in the Android Market (we suppose it’s now called Google Play, though) and comes with a whopping 100 levels to play through. The adverts are minimal and hardly detract from the gameplay, allowing you one extensive test drive before committing.

Android Apps Review Details: Glowium is free. This app requires Android 1.6+ and up. You may download Glowium from the Android Market. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
