SoccerAR: Written and Video Android App Review

Here at Android Apps Review, there’s nothing we like more than augmented reality games. Why? Well, it’s primarily because they’re just about the coolest technology since Angry Birds, but it also has a lot to do with the sheer fun-factor. You see, apps like SoccerAR by developer Torova paint a brilliant picture of what can be done with modern, mobile gaming. We’ll be handing over to your our full review of this killer, sports-themed game for the Android platform, but to find it you’ll have to jump on down below the break. So without further ado, get to reading, Soldier!

Concept and Gameplay

SoccerAR for Android

Like all augmented reality games, SoccerAR uses your Android’s camera to take the world around you and turn it into something completely different. In this case, the app takes your floor, wall, table, etc. and adds a small soccer ball on top of it. It is then your job to kick said ball and to keep it afloat in the air. All of this, of course, happens just within your actual frame of reference: “In real life,” as some might say. Either way, it’s a blast to play, and if you don’t feel like using your feet to kick the ball around, you can of course also use an hand, finger, or other body part.

It’s a cool concept, but obviously it needs some fleshing out. Which, thankfully, Torova has done. They’ve included several different game modes, including three difficulty settings and two different scoring settings. There’s one in which you’re rewarded for keeping the ball alive as many times as you can, while another simply lets you see how long you can go without the added pressure. We liked this variety a lot, and if all of that weren’t enough, we also greatly appreciated the OpenFeint inclusion. We do love us some leader boards!

Design and Layout

Best of all, the app looks pretty good on the Android platform, too! We liked the simplicity of the interface, as well as the wicked settings menu. However, we did have quite a lot of trouble getting the app to recognize our feet. Most often we used our hands to play with the app, as SoccerAR sometimes simply wouldn’t “see” our foot hitting the ball. This might improve with some practice on our part, but we feel it’s more of a calibration issue than anything. Additionally, the app also didn’t quite stretch out to meet the full real estate of our phone’s screen, which bothered us a great deal.

Overall Value

All of our complaints aside, it’s quite hard to argue with an app that comes stock with so much content for so low a price. SoccerAR is completely free in the Android Market, plus some adverts. All together, that strikes us as a wicked bargain for any soccer, augmented reality, or Android gaming fan. Overall, SoccerAR is a great way to while away the hours.

SoccerARAndroid Apps Review Details: SoccerAR is free. This app requires Android 2.1.+ and up. You may download SoccerAR from the Android Market. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
