Urban Rivals: Written and Video Android App Review

Here at Android Apps Review, there’s nothing we like quite so much as an action roleplaying game. Better yet, maybe we like collectible card games more—Yes, we’re nerds. Either way, we haven’t got to pick a favorite genre, thanks to Urban Rivals, by developer Boostr. The app is a nearly perfect rendition of everything we like about both fields, combined into one easy to play package. Best of all, with online multiplayer and a strong data connection, you can battle your enemies until your battery dies, no matter where you are! Concept and Gameplay

Urban Rivals for AndroidReviewed by Luke Patrick

As stated, the concept at work underneath Urban Rivals is somewhere between a turn-based roleplaying game and a collectible card game. However, it most likely leans a bit more toward the latter. You see, in-game players must select a set of cards to work with (their deck) and then go into battle with their selections. Once inside, players face off against their opponents by selecting a card and adding attack points called “Pillz.” The gameplay itself is a perfect mix of rock-paper-scissors and Rook, requiring players to leverage how big their losses might be while vying to win rounds. At the end of the match, who ever owns the most sets walks away with the prize. Or, if you lose all of your health points during the match, you’ll also walk out of the game a loser. Either way, your cards will accrue experience points which they can use to level up. This earns you benefits like you never thought possible, and adds a certain roleplaying game element to the whole kit and caboodle.

Design and Graphics

As cool as the gameplay at the heart of Urban Rivals is, though, we have to admit we were slightly more fond of the art style. The developers are French (which, as francophones, we’re quite stoked about) but the drawings are noticeably anime-inspired. The end result is a plethora of killer characters, gaming backgrounds that shine, and nemesis to put a goofy smile on your face. The entire game has a certain Saturday morning cartoon appeal that we favored immensely. However, none of this is to say that the game isn’t complex or challenging. It truly is, and if you walk into the online rings without some practice, you’re likely to get your lunch handed to you!

Overall Value

Thankfully, the app is completely free in the Android Market! That means you won’t have to pay a dime to dive into the action. Along the way, you can opt to pay for expansions, or just play the game to earn rewards. Either way, Urban Rivals is a blissful hark back to the golden era of trading card games with an healthy dash of spiced-up gameplay to boot. In other words, this one comes recommended!

Android Apps Review Details: Urban Rivals is free. This app requires Android 2.1.+ and up. You may download Urban Rivals from the Android Market. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
