Concept and Functionality
Communilator Pro for Android
As stated, Communilator Pro is first and foremost a translation app. However, it is immediately apparent that the app goes a bit above and beyond most. You see, it offers all the standard European languages we use on a daily basis, but it also offers an entire host of smaller, regional tongues. The breadth is actually quite intense. We were able to translate our native English and French into everything from Afrikaans to Swahili. The app even produces text readings of some of the more well-known languages. All in all, there’s a lot of functionality in the language list alone.
However, the app can also translate items other than text, like a photo. You can upload an item from your camera roll, or you can simply snap a picture of a sign on the street. The app will do the rest, finding the text, translating it, and then giving you the results. Best of all, these translations are automatically saved to your translations folder for safe keeping. Want to be sure a translation sticks around? Just add it as a favorite and the hard work is done. All in all, it’s a wicked cool workup of an app.
Design and Interface
Firstly, we generally liked the interface and layout of the app. We noticed a few small things, like the spinning language wheels being a bit too small for our taste, but with Android it’s hard to get scaling right across devices. Aside from this, we were particularly impressed by the efficiency of the photo reader. Other apps like Google Goggles offer this kind of translation service, but none seem to do it quite as well as Communilator Pro. Overall, we found the translations to be rock solid, which is impressive for any communication app.
Overall Value
At the end of the day, a translation app that’s this good, and costs only $2.99 in the Android Market is easily worth your pence. The app behaved flawlessly, comes with a killer interface, and more languages than one could feasibly shake a stick at. So overall, we highly recommend Communilator Pro, especially for the asking price. If you’re traveling abroad, don’t leave without it!
